Substation Engineers (SE) are responsible for the design, interpretation, application and documentation of drawings and calculations pertaining to the physical design of a substation. Substation Engineers are tasked with ensuring that designs, and their applications, are completed to code and standards set forth by the appropriate authoritative bodies. In addition, SE’s are required to work with customer representatives, Project Management Teams and other engineering disciplines to ensure designs meet appropriate specifications and requirements.\nESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:\nChecks conduit, grounding, control shelter, electrical arrangements, outdoor lighting and equipment vendor design packages.\nPerforms and checks grounding calculations, conduit fill calculations, pulling tension calculations, vehicle tracking calculations, outdoor lighting calculations, lightning protection designs calculations, substation Sag-10 calculations, flexible jumper calculations, bus design calculations, arc-flash calculations, insulation coordination calculations, and underground ampacity calculations\nCreates and checks material list descriptions for all major equipment and minor substation material.\nDemonstrates integrity and ethics in all client relationships and communications.\nAnswers technical questions posed by construction managers, field staff, project managers, customers and their representatives.\nRecognize and recommend methods to improve customer’s experience.\nPerform other studies as able and required.\nTravels periodically to both customer offices for project meetings and to job sites for construction visits and testing\nManages day-to-day activities of schedule and design of projects assigned to them\nCoordinates and problem solves between design teams and departments\nEXPECTATIONS:\nPerforms quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.\nInteracts professionally with other employees and customers.\nWorks effectively as a team contributor on all assigned projects.\nCommunicates regularly with supervisor regarding designs, concerns, studies or tests\nDesire to participate in continued education and training\nOccasional overnight travel to active job sites\nMust have clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position\nAdhere to and practice the Beta core competencies and Beta principle\nMaintains check print set of all work they perform\nUtilizes the department resources in an effective manner to get all work accomplished on time and correctly\nEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:\nBachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.\n5 plus years of experience in the physical design of high voltage substations is required\nPE license is required\nStrong background in Microsoft Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint required; strong verbal and written communication skills are required.\nKnowledge of all or some of the following applications are preferred: AutoCAD, CDEGS grounding software, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP-2000.\nWORKING CONDITIONS:\nWill work in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.\nOvernight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time.
