Position Overview

Crown Innovations is seeking an experienced Aviation Software Verification & Test Engineer to support the development, verification, and certification of advanced aviation navigation systems.

This position will support functional, system, performance, and hardware/software integration testing for safety critical avionics applications. The selected engineer will develop and execute test cases, test scripts, procedures, and verification activities designed to evaluate system performance against defined technical and certification requirements.

The role requires deep experience with DO-178C software verification and certification, avionics software and hardware testing, requirements-based verification, and safety critical aviation systems. The successful candidate must be capable of independently analyzing requirements, developing verification approaches, executing tests, evaluating results, documenting anomalies, and producing high-quality verification evidence.

This position also requires hands on experience with SCADE, strong Java development experience, and familiarity with avionics certification and aircraft safety analysis.

The ideal candidate is an experienced verification engineer who combines strong software development knowledge with rigorous testing discipline, exceptional attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of safety critical aviation software development and certification.

Key Responsibilities

Software Verification & Testing

  • Develop, review, and execute software and system test cases, test scripts, and test procedures.
  • Perform requirements-based verification of safety critical avionics software.
  • Conduct functional, system, integration, and performance testing.
  • Verify software behavior against system and software requirements.
  • Analyze test results and identify, document, and investigate anomalies.
  • Perform regression testing following software or requirements changes.
  • Support software verification activities throughout the avionics development lifecycle.
  • Ensure test artifacts are complete, traceable, repeatable, and suitable for certification evidence.

Avionics Hardware & Software Integration

  • Perform software testing on avionics hardware platforms and integrated hardware/software environments.
  • Support hardware/software integration testing associated with navigation avionics.
  • Evaluate system behavior under normal, abnormal, and boundary conditions.
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware, interface, and integration issues.
  • Support simulation, bench testing, and hardware in the loop testing environments when applicable.
  • Collaborate with software, systems, hardware, and test engineers to isolate and resolve technical issues.

DO-178C Certification & Compliance

  • Perform verification activities in accordance with DO-178C objectives.
  • Support preparation and maintenance of verification evidence required for avionics certification.
  • Ensure traceability between system requirements, software requirements, test procedures, test results, and identified anomalies.
  • Participate in requirements reviews, test reviews, peer reviews, and certification related activities.
  • Support development and review of verification documentation and certification artifacts.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving verification gaps or compliance issues.

Requirements Analysis & Traceability

  • Review system and software requirements for clarity, completeness, consistency, and testability.
  • Develop test cases and procedures directly from approved requirements.
  • Maintain bidirectional traceability between requirements and verification artifacts.
  • Support requirements management and analysis using IBM DOORS or comparable requirements management tools.
  • Identify ambiguous, incomplete, or conflicting requirements and coordinate resolution with engineering stakeholders.

SCADE & Software Development Support

  • Utilize SCADE within model-based software development and verification environments.
  • Support verification of SCADE generated or model-based avionics software.
  • Apply Java development experience to support software development, testing, automation, troubleshooting, or verification activities.
  • Review software behavior and implementation as necessary to support test development and anomaly investigation.
  • Collaborate with development engineers throughout verification and certification activities.

Safety Critical Aviation Systems

  • Support verification and certification activities for navigation avionics and related aircraft systems.
  • Apply understanding of aircraft safety, system safety, and certification considerations when developing verification approaches.
  • Support analysis of system performance and navigation related functionality.
  • Participate in technical reviews involving software, hardware, systems engineering, and certification stakeholders.
  • Maintain rigorous quality standards consistent with safety critical aviation development.

Documentation & Technical Collaboration

  • Develop clear and complete test procedures, test reports, verification records, and technical documentation.
  • Document defects, anomalies, corrective actions, and test results.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to engineering teams and program stakeholders.
  • Participate in peer reviews of requirements, test cases, procedures, results, and verification artifacts.
  • Support reporting program and technical status activities as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Minimum eight years of professional software development, software verification, software testing, or related engineering experience.
  • Minimum five years of Java development experience.
  • Direct professional experience using SCADE.
  • Direct experience supporting DO-178C software development, verification, testing, or certification activities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing requirements-based software test cases and procedures.
  • Experience performing functional, system, integration, or performance testing of avionics systems.
  • Experience testing software in conjunction with avionics hardware.
  • Experience supporting avionics certification and testing activities.
  • Experience with navigation avionics, aircraft navigation systems, inertial navigation systems, or closely related aviation systems.
  • Experience with FAA certification activities, aircraft safety analysis, or other safety critical aviation development processes.
