In this hands-on role, you will help deliver innovative engineering solutions that support a diverse range of scientific research and technology development activities across CSIRO.\nWorking closely with engineers, scientists and technical specialists, you will undertake fabrication, machining, welding and prototyping activities that contribute directly to the development, testing and improvement of research equipment and systems. No two days are the same, with the opportunity to work across a variety of projects, applying established engineering techniques while also contributing ideas and practical solutions to unique technical challenges.\nThis role offers an excellent opportunity for a trade-qualified mechanical professional who enjoys problem-solving, working with modern workshop equipment and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. You'll be supported to broaden your skills and experience, including exposure to CAD/CAM systems, CNC technologies and advanced manufacturing methods, while helping deliver science that makes a real-world impact.\nYour high-level duties will include:\nProvide mechanical and technical engineering support to research projects through the Engineering and Technical Services facility.\nFabricate, modify and maintain equipment and components used in scientific research and engineering development activities.\nDesign or adapt equipment, techniques and processes to meet project requirements and client needs.\nConduct technical testing, investigations, measurements and analysis, including associated calculations and reporting.\nMaintain and troubleshoot complex equipment and support ongoing research operations.\nCollaborate effectively with scientists, engineers, suppliers and colleagues across multidisciplinary teams.\nProvide guidance, instruction and support to colleagues as required.\nContribute to continuous improvement, innovation and safe work practices across the team.\nRole particulars\nLocation and office arrangements: Hobart, Tasmania\nSalary: AU$76k - AU$96k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation\nTenure & work schedule: Indefinite, full time.\nReference: 104120\nAs the successful candidate, you will bring:\nEssential\nA Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) or equivalent trade qualification.\nAbility to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and deliver work under the general direction of senior technical staff.\nA proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability and willingness to contribute innovative ideas and solutions in support of scientific research activities.\nDesirable\nDemonstrated proficiency in welding techniques, including TIG, MIG and MMA.\nExperience with, or willingness to learn, CAD/CAM software and drawing packages.\nExperience with, or willingness to learn, CNC programming and operation of CNC lathes and milling machines, including 5-axis machining.\nRigging or dogging qualifications, working-at-heights certification, and/or forklift or medium rigid truck licences. \nFor full details about this role, and other criteria, please review the Position Description.\nNot sure if you meet all the criteria?\nWhile it is CSIRO policy that the successful candidate must meet all the essential criteria, there are many ways to demonstrate this.
