We acknowledge their continuing connection to their culture and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. View our vision towards reconciliation.\nRole highlights\nGreat opportunity to shape user interfaces for the SKA-Low telescope\nApply your JavaScript and React expertise to world-class science\nJoin a global software team building next-generation infrastructure!\nAbout CSIRO\nAs Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.\nVisit CSIRO.au for more information.\nThe opportunity\nThe SKA-Low project is part of the SKA Observatory’s global mission to build the world’s largest and most advanced radio telescope. In Australia, SKA-Low is being developed on Wajarri Yamaji Country in remote Western Australia, combining high-performance computing, advanced networking and cutting-edge software systems to process vast volumes of scientific data. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to globally significant, next-generation scientific infrastructure.\nThe Computing and Software Group delivers the core platforms and systems that underpin SKA-Low operations. These include integrated control systems managing millions of variables, high-performance data processing capabilities, science management systems, and large-scale distributed networks operating at extraordinary speeds.\nAs the Web/UI Developer, you will develop and support user interfaces used to operate the SKA-Low telescope. You will create intuitive, high-quality UI components that support telescope monitoring and control, the planning and monitoring of observations, and the visualisation of scientific data products. Working primarily with JavaScript and front-end frameworks such as React and NextJS, you will also integrate user interfaces with broader telescope systems using technologies such as GraphQL.\nYou will collaborate with operations and commissioning users to understand their requirements and translate them into practical, usable solutions. As part of a globally distributed software team, you will contribute across the development lifecycle using modern engineering practices, including version control, continuous integration and delivery, automated testing, documentation and code quality processes. You will work within an agile delivery environment as the project progresses from construction towards long-term telescope operations.\nYou will bring experience in modern Web/UI development, together with strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with users and multidisciplinary technical teams. Experience applying user experience principles, working with GNU/Linux platforms, or using virtualisation, containerisation and orchestration technologies will be highly regarded.\nIf you are passionate about creating high-quality digital experiences and would like to apply your software development expertise to one of the world’s most ambitious science and engineering projects, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful contribution.\nYour high-level duties will include:\nDeveloping user interface components in Front-End technologies such as JavaScript and React, in accordance with the SKA quality framework and continuous integration processes working alongside users from Operations and Commissioning team.\nIntegrating user interface modules with other system components, using technologies such as GraphQL.\nParticipating in the activities of the Low Agile Release Train (Low ART) as a member of a distributed software team.\nContributing to the maintenance and operations of telescope and observatory user interfaces, as part of a local software engineering team.\nCommunicating openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of SKAO and CSIRO’s reputation.\nRole particulars\nLocation and office arrangements: Perth, Western Australia\nSalary: AU$100K - AU$113K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation\nTenure & work schedule: Indefinite; Full-time, Part-time or Job-share\nReference: 103628\nAs the successful candidate, you will bring:\nEssential: \nBachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science/Engineering and/or equivalent demonstrated programming experience.\nExperience in Web/UI development using JavaScript and/or Front-End technologies such as React or NextJS. (The candidate is encouraged to provide evidence in the form of publicly available code where possible).\nExperience with modern development practices, including version control, CI/CD, testing, documentation, and code quality aspects.\nAbility to communicate effectively with users, understand, document their requirements and implement them into high-quality and usable UI components.\n\nDesirable: \nKnowledge of User Experience techniques.\nFamiliarity with working on GNU/Linux platforms.\nAwareness of virtualisation, containerisation and orchestration technologies.\nFor full details about this role, please review thePosition Description.\nNot sure if you meet all the criteria?\nWhile it is CSIRO policy that the successful candidate must meet all the essential criteria, there are many ways to demonstrate this.
