As a Test Technician - Controls, you will support the development, testing, and validation of control systems and prototype HVAC products. Working closely with Controls Engineers, R&D, and New Product Introduction (NPI) teams, you will independently set up and execute laboratory testing, troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems, and maintain laboratory equipment and documentation. This role plays a critical part in ensuring product performance, reliability, and compliance while supporting both new product development and sustaining engineering activities.\nWhat you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)\nWhile each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:\nTesting & Validation\nCoordinate daily laboratory testing activities with minimal supervision to support project timelines and engineering objectives.\nCollaborate with Controls Engineers, R&D, NPI, and laboratory personnel to develop test plans, procedures, and schedules.\nIndependently set up, configure, and operate laboratory test equipment and systems.\nExecute benchtop, laboratory, and product-level testing to support new product development, validation, and sustaining engineering efforts.\nPerform software loading, parameter configuration, and firmware updates for control devices and embedded systems.\nCollect, document, and communicate test results, observations, and recommendations to engineering teams.\nPrepare and maintain test procedures, reports, schedules, and supporting documentation.\nTroubleshooting & Technical Support\nDiagnose and troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and control system issues to support testing and product development activities.\nRead and interpret control logic, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.\nSupport root cause investigations and corrective actions related to control system performance and testing issues.\nAssist engineering teams with prototype evaluation, troubleshooting, and performance verification.\n3. Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management\nMaintain laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and test systems, including calibration status, preventive maintenance, and inventory control.\nSupport the development, documentation, and continuous improvement of Engineering Lab Work Instructions and testing procedures.\nAssist in evaluating and recommending laboratory equipment purchases, calibration requirements, and operating procedures.\nEnsure laboratory equipment and test systems are maintained in a safe, organized, and operational condition.\nSupport internal and external laboratory audits and assist with compliance activities as required.\n4. Prototype Fabrication & Development Support\nBuild, modify, and support prototype control systems, wire harnesses, and test assemblies.\nPerform electronics fabrication activities, including soldering, wiring, and assembly of prototype components.\nSupport engineering development efforts through fabrication, testing, and validation of experimental systems and concepts.\n5. Continuous Improvement\nParticipate in initiatives to improve laboratory operations, testing efficiency, documentation practices, and product quality.\nRecommend process improvements related to testing methods, equipment utilization, and laboratory organization.\nSupport the implementation of engineering and quality best practices.\nWhat we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)\nWe each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:\nRequired Experience\nDemonstrated knowledge of electrical and electronic principles and hands-on troubleshooting techniques.\nAbility to read and interpret control logic diagrams, wiring schematics, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.\nHands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation used in electrical and electronic testing, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and soldering equipment.\nExperience setting up, executing, and documenting engineering test plans.\nPractical experience with electronics fabrication, soldering, wiring, and prototype assembly.\nStrong organizational, documentation, and computer skills.\nAbility to work independently while managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.\nPreferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nExperience with surface-mount technology (SMT) soldering techniques.\nExperience working with Modbus, BACnet, or other industrial communication protocols.\nExperience supporting products subject to CSA, UL, or other regulatory certification requirements.\nWorking knowledge of programming languages and development tools, including LabVIEW, C++, C#, Flutter, Python, or similar technologies.\nExperience working in HVAC, controls, automation, or product development environments.\nFamiliarity with embedded controls, firmware updates, and electronic system integration.\nExperience supporting laboratory audits, calibration programs, and quality systems.\nEducation & Certifications\nHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.\nAssociate degree or technical certification in Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related technical discipline preferred.\nPhysical Demands\nFrequent computer and keyboard use; continuous use of computer monitors and engineering software tools.\nAbility to work in laboratory and manufacturing environments.\nOccasional lifting of testing equipment, components, or materials as required.\nAbility to use hand tools, soldering equipment, laboratory instrumentation, and electronic testing devices.\nAbility to stand, walk, bend, and lift equipment, components, and materials as required.\nAbility to safely work with electrical and electronic systems in a laboratory environment.\nTravel & Working Environment\nPrimarily office and laboratory-based work environment.\nLaboratory environment requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including foot, eye, and hearing protection as required.\nOccasional exposure to energized equipment, electrical systems, and laboratory testing environments.\nMinimal travel required (less than 10%), including visits to suppliers, training events, and other company facilities.\nHow we live our culture\nOur culture is at the center of what we do and, more importantly, who we are.
