Under limited supervision, you will interpret engineering drawings and specifications to assemble, modify, and validate test systems, ensuring accurate and reliable data collection. This role plays a critical part in executing product testing to industry standards, supporting engineering analysis, and maintaining the functionality, safety, and readiness of laboratory equipment and systems.\nWhat you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)\nWhile each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:\nTest Equipment Assembly & Modification\nPlan, layout, assemble, and modify test equipment and structural assemblies using blueprints, engineering drawings, and sketches.\nConstruct and assemble product prototypes, test systems, and experimental setups based on engineering requirements and performance criteria.\nModify equipment by adding, removing, or altering components in accordance with defined diagrams and specifications.\nFabricate and modify components using sheet metal tools, soldering equipment, and basic machine shop equipment to support testing and development activities.\nTesting & Data Collection\nSet up and operate test equipment and product assemblies to evaluate performance under varying operating conditions.\nConduct testing in accordance with applicable industry and regulatory standards (e.g., ANSI, ASHRAE, CSA, IEC, or similar).\nInstall and configure instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including thermocouples, RTDs, and related sensors.\nCollect, compile, and summarize test data to support engineering analysis and product validation.\nReview test results with engineering to identify and resolve product or equipment issues, malfunctions, or incomplete data.\n3. Troubleshooting & Maintenance\nDiagnose test equipment malfunctions and perform repairs, adjustments, or component replacements as required.\nTroubleshoot test irregularities related to both equipment performance and product functionality, working with engineering to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.\nAdjust, calibrate, and maintain test systems to ensure accuracy, reliability, and repeatability of results.\nPerform routine maintenance and servicing of lab equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.\n4. Troubleshooting & Maintenance\nFollow and enforce established laboratory safety procedures, including safe handling of fuels, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment.\nMaintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, ensuring proper setup and shutdown of equipment and test systems.\nInspect lab equipment and test setups to ensure safe and compliant operation prior to and during testing activities.\n5. Tools & Equipment Usage\nUtilize hand tools, small power tools, and various measuring and testing devices to complete assigned tasks safely and effectively.\nOperate fabrication and shop equipment as needed to support prototype development and test setup modifications.\nWhat we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)\nWe each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:\nRequired Experience\nExperience working with mechanical or electrical test equipment, assembly, or maintenance in a manufacturing, lab, or engineering environment.\nAbility to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical schematics.\nStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to equipment and systems.\nBasic knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical components, and testing methods.\nAbility to work under general supervision while managing assigned tasks and priorities.\nProficiency in basic computer applications for data entry, documentation, and test reporting.\nPreferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nExperience supporting engineering lab environments, product testing, or prototype development.\nFamiliarity with industry testing standards (e.g., ANSI, CSA, ASHRAE, or similar certification requirements).\nHands-on experience with fabrication tools, machine shop equipment, or prototype assembly.\nExperience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including thermocouples, RTDs, and sensors.\nAbility to collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional teams.\nStrong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in data collection and equipment setup.\nWorking knowledge of safety practices related to laboratory and industrial environments.\nEducation & Certifications\nHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.\nAssociate degree or technical certification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Technology preferred.\nPhysical Demands\nFrequent use of hands for tools, assembly, and equipment operation.\nAbility to stand, walk, bend, and lift materials or components (up to approximately 25 lbs) as required.\nAbility to perform light fabrication work and operate tools and equipment in a lab or manufacturing environment.\nTravel & Working Environment\nPrimarily onsite in a lab and manufacturing environment.\nMay be exposed to noise, heat, or other industrial conditions depending on testing requirements.\nMinimal travel required.\nHow we live our culture\nOur culture is at the center of what we do and, more importantly, who we are.
