This role oversees multiple client engagements, reviews tax returns, mentors staff, maintains strong client relationships, and ensures work is completed accurately and on schedule. In a smaller CPA firm, the Tax Manager is expected to be actively involved in technical tax work while contributing to practice development and operational efficiency.\nEssential Responsibilities\nManage multiple tax engagements from planning through completion while meeting deadlines and budget expectations.\n\nReview and prepare federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations.\n\nProvide proactive tax planning and consulting to minimize client tax liabilities and identify planning opportunities.\n\nResearch complex tax issues and communicate findings and recommendations to clients and firm leadership.\n\nServe as the primary contact for assigned clients, building long-term relationships through responsive and professional service.\n\nSupervise, mentor, and develop tax staff and seniors by reviewing work, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth.\n\nCoordinate workflow, assign projects, and monitor engagement progress throughout the tax season.\n\nAssist clients with IRS and state tax notices, examinations, and correspondence.\n\nStay current on changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry developments, ensuring compliance and advising clients accordingly.\n\nIdentify opportunities for additional services and participate in business development and client retention efforts.\n\nCollaborate with partners on tax strategies, firm initiatives, and process improvements.\n\nMaintain accurate engagement documentation and comply with firm quality control standards.\n\nSupport year-round client advisory services, including estimated tax planning, entity selection, succession planning, and business consulting.\n\nQualifications\nBachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's in Taxation preferred.\n\nActive CPA license required.\n\n6+ years of progressive public accounting tax experience.\n\nExperience reviewing complex tax returns across multiple entity types.\n\nStrong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations.\n\nPrevious supervisory or team leadership experience.\n\nExperience with tax preparation and research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, or similar).\n\nProficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel\n\nCompensation & Benefits\nThe total rewards package at Current includes base salary and benefits.\nOur salary ranges are competitive within the accounting industry and are updated regularly using the most reliable compensation survey data for our industry.
