While nature took billions of years to perfect molecules, we are harnessing AI to unlock trillion-dollar materials breakthroughs in months, not millennia. Our founding team is the most cited in the world, comprised of world-class researchers in AI, chemistry and engineering.\nWe are working on some of the hardest and most important challenges including energy, clean water, the future of compute, and carbon capture, and this is just the start of what our 'search engine' for next-generation materials will unlock.\nWe invite you to be part of a diverse, innovative team at the intersection of AI and materials science, working to create impactful partnerships that drive innovation, scalability, and industry collaboration. This work matters. Your work matters.\nWe’re on the cusp of the on-demand materials era. Join us.\nThe Role\nWe hire across a spectrum of backgrounds. Some Application Scientists are computational (atomistic and molecular simulation, machine-learned force fields), some are experimental (synthesis, processing, characterisation, lab automation), and some are data-driven (materials and cheminformatics, optimisation). What they share is the ability to turn a partner’s problem into a plan, deliver it, and translate fluently between experimental, computational, and machine learning teams.\nWe operate a matrix structure. You will have a home team, but may contribute to projects in another pillar as demand and your expertise evolve.\nYour Impact\nYou will own the scientific delivery of partner projects, from scoping to results. Working with our technical programme managers, ML researchers, platform engineers, and lab integration team, you will make sure our platform answers the questions that matter to partners, and that what is learned on each project feeds back into tools and workflows used across the company.\nAlongside delivery, you will help build the cross-cutting capabilities that future projects depend on, such as validated workflows, harmonised data pipelines and agentic design campaigns.\nApplication Areas\nWe are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the areas below. You do not need to cover a whole pillar.\nElectronics\nSemiconductor processing and thin-film deposition.\n\nDevice-level modelling that links materials properties to device performance.\n\nMolecular and polymer materials for electronics, including organic semiconductors and dielectrics.\n\nPhotonic and thermal materials for advanced computing and packaging.\n\nEnergy\nHeterogeneous and electrocatalysis, including electrified interfaces and solvation.\n\nML-accelerated reaction kinetics (e.g. kinetic Monte Carlo) and multiscale modelling techniques (from atomistic simulations to reactor-scale models).\n\nBattery materials beyond electrodes, including electrolytes, polymer electrolytes and interphase formation.\n\nPhotovoltaics, including tandem architectures and device stability.\n\nEnvironment\nSolvation and interfacial simulation of water, solvents and gases in contact with materials, including adsorption, transport and separation.\n\nPorous and soft materials such as zeolitic and organic frameworks, porous polymers, membranes and ion-exchange materials.\n\nFormulations and soft matter, including polymer and molecular formulation design.\n\nProcesses such as water treatment, desalination, contaminant removal and capture of target molecules from gas and liquid streams.\n\nCross-cutting\nMaterials and cheminformatics: data quality, ingestion and harmonisation across experimental and computational sources.\n\nHigh-throughput and automated experimentation, including robotics and commercial lab automation systems.\n\nBayesian, multi-objective and agentic optimisation of scientific campaigns.\n\nWhat You Will Do\nProject leadership and delivery\nLead partner projects from scoping to delivery, as a key point of contact alongside the technical program managers.\n\nWrite technical scopes that define objectives, deliverables, success criteria, and timelines.\n\nPrepare regular technical reports and presentations for partners and internal teams.\n\nScience and campaigns\nApply and extend our platform to partner problems, using simulation, machine learning, data-driven optimisation, or experiments as the project requires.\n\nDesign and steer discovery campaigns, including agentic and closed-loop campaigns with partner labs.\n\nAssess when models, simulations, and data can be trusted, and contribute to validating them against experiments.\n\nBridging experimental and computational teams\nTranslate platform recommendations into clear, executable experimental plans, and translate lab realities back into requirements for internal teams.\n\nMake sure data from partners and our own workflows are clean, structured, and consistent.\n\nWork closely with partner labs, including on-site visits at key stages of a project.\n\nCapability and product development\nBuild and automate workflows that run reliably at scale within our platform.\n\nRelay partner feedback to TPMs, ML researchers, and platform engineers to improve tools and workflows.\n\nStay informed about advances in your field and contribute to the scientific direction of your team.\n\nMust Have Skills and Qualifications\nA PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.\n\nDeep, hands-on expertise in at least one of: atomistic simulation (including machine-learned force fields); experimental materials or chemistry, ideally with automation or high-throughput methods; materials or cheminformatics with machine learning and optimisation.\n\nA track record in one or more of the application areas above.\n\nPython skills for data handling, analysis, automation or modelling, and familiarity with version control (Git).\n\nExceptional ability to communicate with both experimental and computational scientists, and to translate between them.\n\nA personal passion for CuspAI's mission and the potential of AI to unlock breakthroughs in materials science.\n\nBonus Points (But Not Critical)\nIndustry experience, particularly in the semiconductor, electronics, energy, or chemical sectors.\n\nExperience leading projects or collaborations with external partners, including writing technical scopes or proposals.\n\nExperience with multiscale modelling, from atomistic to mesoscale, continuum or device level.\n\nPractical synthesis or processing experience, with an understanding of what makes a route feasible and reproducible.\n\nProfessional software engineering practice, such as code review, testing and deployment.\n\nPrior experience in a start-up or fast-growth technology company.\n\nAdditional Considerations\nThese roles can be based in our London, Cambridge, Amsterdam, or Berlin offices, with the expectation of being in the office at least three days per week. There may be regular travel to partner sites and other CuspAI offices for collaboration and project work.\nWhat We Offer\nA competitive salary: We value and reward impact and growth\n\nEquity in CuspAI: You have a stake in the success of the company\n\nTime off to stay fresh: 28 days holiday (DE, NL, UK) or 21 days holiday (JP, SG, US), in addition to local public holidays\n\n‘Gold Standard’ parental leave: 26 weeks (primary caregiver) and 12 weeks (secondary caregiver) at full pay - we look after you and your family while we work on the most important materials discovery problems together\n\nProfessional development budget: We invest in your career development so you can stay up to date with the latest industry knowledge or add to your skills to increase impact and growth\n\nSolve meaningful problems: See how your work has a direct impact on advancing materials science and solving sustainability and climate-related problems through the creation and application of bleeding-edge SOTA technology and revolutionary techniques\n\nTrue interdisciplinary teamwork: Be part of a deeply collaborative environment bridging AI research, computational chemistry, and experimental science - work with world-class researchers and engineers who enjoy sharing knowledge and supporting each other\n\nJoin us in shaping the future of materials with AI. Together, we can create groundbreaking solutions for a more sustainable world.\nCuspAI is an equal opportunities employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We do not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding), veteran status, or any other basis protected by applicable law.\nWe actively encourage applications from all backgrounds and value the unique perspectives and contributions that diversity brings to our team.\nPlease let us know if you require any specific adjustments during or after the interview process. We will do everything we can within reason to accommodate.","description_format":"text","description_chars":9067,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"phd","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity","Parental leave","Professional development"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"Germany","iso":"DE","kind":"country"},{"name":"United Kingdom","iso":"GB","kind":"country"},{"name":"Netherlands","iso":"NL","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Artificial Intelligence","Manufacturing","AI for Science"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-22T15:07:09Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"GB","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"Licensed UK visa sponsor (Skilled Worker)","filings_12m":null,"filings_prev_12m":null,"green_card_filings_12m":null,"median_offered_wage_usd":null,"route":"Skilled Worker","cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-24T06:24:00+00:00","sources":["UK Home Office: register of licensed sponsors (workers)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":1,"expected_fill_days":74,"reasons":["conf:0","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-24T06:02:35Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/cuspai-application-scientist","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/cuspai-application-scientist.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-25T04:41:24Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":6214,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-26T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":177783},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=177783"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fcuspai-application-scientist"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fcuspai-application-scientist"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fcuspai-application-scientist"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/cuspai-application-scientist\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fcuspai-application-scientist"}]}
