Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.\nPosition Summary:\nCVS Health's Aetna Digital organization is seeking a highly technical and people-focused Senior Engineering Manager to lead multiple teams responsible for building and operating the backend services and APIs that power our core digital health experiences.\nThis leader will manage a team of approximately 10-12 software engineers and will be responsible for delivering scalable, secure, and resilient platform capabilities that support millions of member interactions. The ideal candidate combines deep engineering expertise with strong leadership skills, driving technical excellence while fostering a high-performing and engaged engineering culture.\nWorking within Aetna Digital's product operating model, this role partners closely with Product Management, Architecture, Experience teams, Security, and Enterprise stakeholders to define and execute technology roadmaps that deliver business and customer value. This leader will also champion the adoption of emerging AI capabilities that improve both member-facing experience and engineering productivity.\nKey Responsibilities:\nEngineering Leadership & People Development\nLead, coach, and develop a team of 10-12 highly skilled software engineers, creating an environment of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning\nEstablish a culture of engineering excellence through mentorship, technical coaching, regular feedback, and career development planning\nDrive workforce planning, hiring, succession planning, performance management, and organizational growth initiatives\nFoster an inclusive and engaging team culture that attracts and retains top engineering talent\nTechnical Leadership & Architecture\nProvide technical leadership for the design, development, deployment, and operation of cloud-native backend services and APIs that support core Aetna Digital products and experiences\nEstablish and enforce API design standards, engineering best practices, architecture principles, and operational excellence frameworks\nPartner with architects and senior engineers to define scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable solutions aligned with enterprise technology strategy\nLead architectural reviews and technical decision-making, ensuring solutions meet performance, reliability, compliance, and security requirements\nDrive modernization initiatives, reducing technical debt while improving platform scalability, maintainability, and developer velocity\nProduct Delivery & Stakeholder Management\nPartner closely with Product Managers and business stakeholders to translate product vision into executable engineering roadmaps and delivery plans\nEnsure predictable delivery of strategic initiatives through effective planning, prioritization, dependency management, and risk mitigation\nCommunicate technical strategies, tradeoffs, execution progress, and business impacts to both technical and non-technical audiences\nBuild strong relationships across Product, Architecture, Security, Enterprise Technology, and Operations teams to drive alignment and execution\nEngineering Excellence & Operational Reliability\nEstablish and continuously improve engineering practices related to CI/CD, automated testing, code quality, observability, reliability, security, and platform performance\nDrive adoption of DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, including monitoring, incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement\nEnsure systems meet high standards for availability, scalability, compliance, and operational resilience\nLeverage metrics and engineering KPIs to improve delivery effectiveness, software quality, and customer outcomes\nAI Innovation & Future Readiness\nChampion the adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices that improve developer productivity, software quality, operational efficiency, and delivery speed\nIdentify opportunities to incorporate AI-powered capabilities into digital experiences to improve member engagement and personalization\nStay current on emerging technologies, platforms, and industry trends, bringing innovative ideas that advance Aetna Digital's technology roadmap\nRequired Qualifications:\n7+ years of software engineering experience building enterprise-grade applications and services\n3+ years of engineering management experience leading software development teams\n3+ years of experience with Node.js, Java, or Spring Boot\n3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating cloud-native applications in AWS, GCP, or Azure\nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience leading backend engineering teams responsible for APIs, microservices, and distributed systems\nDemonstrated success delivering large-scale technology initiatives in partnership with Product and business stakeholders\nExperience driving engineering excellence initiatives including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, reliability, and operational maturity\nStrong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills\nExperience building high-performing teams through coaching, hiring, mentoring, and performance management\nExperience with API gateway platforms, service mesh technologies, and modern integration frameworks\nExpertise in microservices architecture, containerization, Kubernetes, and cloud platform services\nExperience managing production support models, incident response processes, and on-call organizations\nExperience leveraging Generative AI, AI-assisted coding platforms, agentic workflows, or AI-powered developer tools within software engineering organizations\nExperience partnering with architecture organizations to define enterprise standards and technology strategies\nEducation:\nBachelor’s degree or, equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)\nPay Range\nThe typical pay range for this role is:\n$130,295.00 - $260,590.00This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
