This role is for a hands-on infrastructure engineer with a VMware and hyper-converged background, who will provide Level 3 expertise, support, and operational ownership for our critical private cloud platform.\nThis position is responsible for operating, maintaining, and modernizing the on-premises private cloud environment for the Enterprise Server infrastructure. The engineer would ensure the reliability, performance, optimization, and security of CVS Health's virtualized infrastructure through disciplined, ITIL-aligned operations and continuous improvement.\nThe Key responsibilities for a Virtual Operations Engineer are:\nPrivate Cloud Operations\nOversee the administration, monitoring, and maintenance of the private cloud platform, including converged and hyper-converged compute virtualization, software-defined networking, and software-defined storage, ensuring optimal performance and high availability\nAdminister the current VMware ESXi and vSphere environment (including vCenter, vSAN, and hyper-converged platforms such as VxRail; VMware Cloud Foundation and NSX as applicable) and troubleshoot as appropriate\nProvision, configure, and decommission virtual machines, templates, and resource pools, leveraging vMotion, HA, DRS, and vSphere Distributed Switches, in line with standards and change management\nPlan and execute lifecycle management, including patching, upgrades, and firmware and hardware updates, with minimal downtime\nManage backup, replication, and disaster recovery processes across sites, including regular recovery testing\nCollaborate with data center, network, storage, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and scalability of infrastructure components, including hardware refresh projects on enterprise platforms such as Dell/EMC\nProvide L3 support for critical incidents, working to quickly diagnose and resolve issues that impact system availability\n24x7 on call support as L3 escalation for outage and critical incidents\nPerform problem resolution and root cause analysis for critical incidents. Acts as liaison to vendor partners for advanced solutions\nAutomation and Orchestratio n\n Automate routine tasks and processes through scripting and automation tools where practical to streamline operations and reduce manual intervention\nLearn and contribute to automation using PowerShell/PowerCLI, Python, Ansible, or Terraform to reduce configuration drift; prior scripting experience is a plus, and mentoring is available\nSupport private cloud orchestration and self-service provisioning tooling (e.g., VMware Aria, service catalogs).\nWork within ServiceNow incident, problem, change, and CMDB processes to keep inventory and system records accurate\nPartner with automation teams to build relationships between systems such as ServiceNow, Ansible, SCOM, vSphere, Satellite, etc\n\nSecurity and Compliance\n Partner with the Vulnerability management team to implement and enforce security best practices, ensuring that private cloud hosts, virtual machines, and associated services meet CVS Health's security and compliance standards, including HIPAA\nCollaborate with the Vulnerability management team to conduct regular vulnerability assessments and apply patches, updates, and system hardening to mitigate potential threats as needed\nPerformance Optimization and Capacity Management\n Continuously assess platform performance and identify opportunities for improvement to enhance efficiency, scalability, and reliability\nAnalyze system logs, monitor resource utilization (for example, with vRealize/Aria Operations), and perform tuning to achieve optimal cluster and workload performance\nIdentify opportunities for self-healing and proactive remediation to increase uptime\nMonitor infrastructure capacity to ensure that compute, storage, and network resources are effectively allocated and anticipate future infrastructure requirements\nDocumentation and Knowledge Sharin g\n Maintain up-to-date documentation of platform configurations, architecture diagrams, runbooks, procedures, and policies\nShare knowledge and expertise with junior team members, facilitating skill development and fostering a culture of continuous learning\nStakeholder Interaction\n Communicate with internal stakeholders to gather requirements, provide technical guidance, and manage expectations\nConvey and document private cloud expertise to all partners during critical outages\n Required Qualifications\n7+ years experience in systems, infrastructure, or virtualization operations\nIn-depth knowledge of private cloud technologies, particularly VMware vSphere/ESXi and hyper-converged platforms (e.g., vSAN, VxRail), with exposure to VMware Cloud Foundation, Nutanix, Hyper-V, or OpenShift, and experience managing virtualized environments\nExperience working in an on call, 24x7 environment\nProficiency in Windows Server OS, Active Directory, and Group Policy; Linux familiarity \nStrong understanding of data center networking (VLANs, DNS, DHCP, load balancing) and enterprise storage (SAN, vSAN, HCI, software-defined storage)\nWorking knowledge of ITIL practices, including incident, problem, and change management, preferably using ServiceNow\nExcellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills\nStrong communication and collaboration skills\n Preferred Qualifications\nExperience with VMware vRealize/Aria Operations or other monitoring and observability tools (e.g., SCOM, Splunk, Grafana)\nCertifications such as VCP-DCV, VCP-NV, VCAP, Nutanix NCP, or RHCSA\nFamiliarity with server hardware platforms (Dell/EMC, HPE, Cisco UCS) and out-of-band management.\nFamiliarity with security and compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, NIST)\nExperience in managed service provider or multi-client environments, including L3 escalation and 24x7 on-call rotation\nExposure to scripting and automation (PowerShell/PowerCLI, Python, Ansible, or Terraform)\nExperience writing runbooks and architecture documentation and mentoring junior engineers\n Education\nBachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Highschool diploma plus 4 years relevant work experience)\nPay Range\nThe typical pay range for this role is:\n$118,450.00 - $236,900.00This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
