Job Description: Performance Test Engineer
Role Summary
We are looking for an experienced Performance Test Engineer to plan, execute, and analyze performance tests for a cloud-native, microservices-based healthcare platform on Microsoft Azure. The role focuses on validating scalability, reliability, responsiveness, and resiliency using k6, Azure Application Insights, Azure Monitor, and related observability tools.
Experience
- 5-8 years of experience in performance, load, stress, spike, soak, scalability, and failover testing.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience testing microservices in cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop realistic workload models for end-to-end user journeys across application and infrastructure components.
- Design and script k6 tests for REST, gRPC, WebSocket, and GraphQL APIs with correlation, parameterization, thresholds, checks, and think-time modeling.
- Execute load, stress, spike, soak, scalability, failover, and AKS autoscaling tests, including HPA and Cluster Autoscaler validation.
- Integrate k6 tests into Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines with automated quality gates.
- Analyze telemetry using Azure Application Insights, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, KQL, distributed tracing, live metrics, and dashboards.
- Identify bottlenecks across application, container, database, cache, storage, and network layers.
- Assess the performance impact of HA, DR replication, TDE, backup, and restore scenarios.
- Publish concise executive and technical reports with clear findings, risks, and recommendations.
Must-Have Technical Skills
Performance Testing
- Strong hands-on expertise in k6, including scripting, scenarios, executors, modules, thresholds, checks, and xk6 extensions.
- Experience in workload modeling, capacity planning, and percentile-based SLA analysis.
Knowledge of HTTPS/REST, gRPC, WebSockets, SignalR, GraphQL, OAuth2/OIDC, and Entra ID token handling.
Azure Monitoring and Observability
- Expertise in Azure Application Insights, including dependency tracking, distributed tracing, live metrics, availability tests, custom telemetry, and sampling.
- Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, KQL, Workbooks, alerts, action groups, Container Insights, VM Insights, and SQL Insights.
- Working knowledge of Grafana, Prometheus, Azure Managed Prometheus, and Azure Managed Grafana.
Azure Cloud and Infrastructure
- Hands-on understanding of AKS, pods, deployments, HPA, node pools, resource quotas, ingress, and service mesh concepts.
- Experience with Azure Container Registry, Azure Cache for Redis, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Storage, and Managed Disks.
- Knowledge of Azure networking, including ExpressRoute, VPN Gateway, NSGs, Private Endpoints, Front Door, App Gateway, and TLS termination.
- Awareness of Azure security and resiliency capabilities such as Entra ID, Key Vault, TDE, certificates, Availability Zones, HA, DR replication, and autoscale rules.
- Understanding of Azure local setup and Azure Arc for hybrid and edge-enabled cloud environments.
Microservices, DevOps, Database, and Profiling
- Strong knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, kubectl, Helm, Git, YAML, Bash, and PowerShell.
- Experience integrating performance tests into CI/CD pipelines with pass/fail thresholds.
Understanding of API Gateway tools such as Traefik, service discovery, retries, circuit breakers, throttling, and microservices resiliency patterns.
- Ability to analyze Azure SQL MI performance using execution plans, wait stats, Query Store, DMVs, and indexing strategies.
- Experience analyzing Redis cache behavior, including hit/miss ratio, eviction policies, and connection pool tuning.
- Ability to correlate k6 test runs with Application Insights telemetry using custom headers and test IDs.
- Experience performing root cause analysis across CPU, memory, GC, thread pool, database, cache, and network layers.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to communicate performance risks and recommendations clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
- Self-driven, collaborative, and comfortable working with distributed Dev, QA, and SRE teams.
Good-to-Have
- Ability to define performance test strategy based on architecture, non-functional requirements, and SLAs for microservices, APIs, PAS OE, Data Server, and database layers.
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
