The Mason Foreman is an expert-level masonry professional and hands-on working leader responsible for leading day-to-day masonry, restoration, repair, and related specialty work. This position possesses advanced knowledge of masonry materials, methods, techniques, and systems and serves as a technical resource for the crew.
Working under the direction of the Superintendent, or independently on smaller-scope projects as assigned, the Mason Foreman actively performs work alongside the crew while coordinating manpower, materials, equipment, scaffolding, sequencing, safety, quality, and production. The Foreman provides technical direction, troubleshoots complex field conditions, and develops Masons and Masonry Apprentices through hands-on training and coaching.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serve as the craft expert and technical resource for assigned masonry work, applying advanced knowledge of masonry materials, installation methods, repair techniques, and proper work practices.
- Lead and actively perform brick, block, cultured stone, tuckpointing, historic restoration, masonry patching, repair, and other masonry-related work.
- Lead and perform caulking and sealant installation, including applications on masonry, concrete flatwork, joints, openings, penetrations, and other construction applications as assigned.
- Lead installation of lintels, bond beams, reinforcement, anchors, ties, flashing, insulation, and other masonry wall-system components.
- Evaluate existing conditions and determine appropriate methods and techniques for masonry repair, restoration, patching, and tuckpointing, coordinating unusual or significant conditions with the Superintendent.
- Troubleshoot complex masonry conditions and provide technical direction to the crew to maintain quality and productivity.
- Direct daily crew activities and assign work based on project priorities, employee skill levels, and production needs.
- Plan upcoming work, including manpower, materials, tools, equipment, scaffolding, access, and sequencing, to maintain efficient operations.
- Perform and coordinate masonry layout and ensure the crew understands applicable dimensions, elevations, openings, and other requirements.
- Coordinate and actively participate in the setup, modification, dismantling, and use of scaffolding in accordance with training and company requirements.
- Establish and maintain workmanship expectations for line, grade, plumb, level, joint consistency, finish, appearance, and overall quality.
- Determine material quantities and coordinate the ordering and delivery of materials necessary to support upcoming work.
- Monitor production and adjust crew assignments, sequencing, or work methods as needed to maintain schedule and efficiency.
- Independently lead small-scope masonry, repair, restoration, and service projects from initial planning and setup through completion.
- Coordinate masonry activities with the Superintendent, other Daniels crews, subcontractors, and trades to support project sequencing.
- Identify and resolve routine field issues and promptly communicate conditions that may affect scope, safety, quality, cost, or schedule to the Superintendent.
- Serve as a trainer and mentor for Masons and Masonry Apprentices by demonstrating proper techniques, explaining the reasoning behind work methods, providing feedback, and reinforcing workmanship expectations.
- Evaluate the skill development of crew members and communicate training needs, performance concerns, and demonstrated capabilities to the Superintendent.
- Promote accountability for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, workmanship, and proper care of company tools and equipment.
- Communicate regularly with the Superintendent regarding progress, manpower, materials, upcoming work, field conditions, and potential issues.
- Maintain an organized and professional work area and represent Daniels Construction positively with customers, project partners, and other trades.
- Perform other construction and trade-related duties as assigned based on project and company needs
Daniels Construction operates as a merit shop contractor. Employees are hired for a primary trade or position but are expected to support other construction activities when needed. Work assignments may vary based on project schedules, staffing needs, weather conditions, customer priorities, or business demands. Employees should be willing to perform duties outside their primary trade, provided they have the appropriate training and can perform the work safely.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Safely performs the physical demands of construction work, including lifting, climbing, bending, kneeling, and working in varying weather conditions and active construction environments.
Qualifications (Including Education and Experience)
- High School Diploma and/or GED, required
- Completion of a recognized masonry/bricklaying apprenticeship or equivalent combination of masonry training and demonstrated field experience.
- 7+ Years of Experience in masonry, preferred
- Basic understanding of construction tools and materials
- Strong willingness to learn and improve
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record as required for assigned responsibilities.
- Willingness to travel within 90 miles of Madison/Dane County (surrounding areas may be requested)
- Expert-level knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in the masonry trade, with the ability to perform, troubleshoot, and provide technical direction for advanced masonry work.
- Completion of a recognized masonry/bricklaying apprenticeship or equivalent combination of extensive masonry training and demonstrated field experience.
- Advanced experience with brick, block, tuckpointing, patching, masonry repair, and restoration, including the ability to determine appropriate work methods for varying field conditions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of historic masonry restoration practices and the ability to protect and maintain existing materials and finishes.
- Working knowledge of cultured stone, mortar, grout, reinforcement, lintels, bond beams, flashing, anchors, ties, insulation, sealants, and related masonry systems.
- Demonstrated ability to perform and oversee caulking and sealant applications on masonry, concrete flatwork, and other assigned construction applications.
- Ability to read and apply construction plans, details, dimensions, elevations, and specifications and translate requirements into daily field activities.
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems, troubleshoot field conditions, and determine appropriate solutions within the responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to plan work, determine manpower and material needs, sequence activities, and effectively lead a masonry crew.
- Ability to safely coordinate scaffold setup, modification, use, and dismantling in accordance with applicable training and company requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to teach masonry skills, demonstrate proper techniques, coach employees, and develop less-experienced craft professionals.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and field leadership skills.
- Dependable attendance and ability to adapt to changing project conditions, priorities, and schedules.
