Dawn Aerospace builds satellite propulsion systems and a reusable space plane for suborbital flight. Its green propellant thrusters fly on satellites from multiple international operators. The company operates from New Zealand and the Netherlands.

About the Role

We are looking for an Electrical Systems Engineer to define and improve how spacecraft electrical systems are designed across our in-space propulsion product portfolio.

As Dawn Aerospace continues to scale, you'll develop the electrical system architectures, design methodologies, tools and verification processes that enable engineers to deliver reliable flight systems more efficiently. You'll identify common patterns across products, standardise system designs, automate engineering workflows and improve how requirements, interfaces and verification are managed throughout the development lifecycle.

This could include automating requirements traceability, compliance reporting, power and mass budgets, reliability analysis, system configuration control, interface definitions, documentation and verification activities.

Success in this role means delivering increasingly capable, reliable and compliant spacecraft while reducing the engineering effort required to bring new products to customers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Own and continuously improve the electrical system design methodology across Dawn Aerospace's in-space propulsion products, developing standard architectures, reusable design approaches and engineering tools that enable efficient and consistent product development.

  • Develop and maintain scalable processes for requirements management, system design, verification, documentation and configuration control that support high-quality engineering at scale.

  • Work directly with customers to understand technical requirements and translate these into system requirements, verification plans, specifications and test procedures.

  • Collaborate with R&D teams to develop new propulsion products and improve system-level design methodologies throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Support propulsion operations by investigating system anomalies, assessing the severity of non-conformances, identifying root causes and implementing corrective and preventative actions.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in electrical systems engineering, systems engineering, systems integration or a related engineering role within aerospace, defence or another high-reliability industry.

  • Experience developing system architectures, electrical system documentation or engineering design processes.

  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements management, verification and validation.

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers and/or end users as a technical point of contact.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

We recognise that great engineers come from a range of backgrounds. If you have strong systems thinking, enjoy solving complex engineering problems and are passionate about improving how engineering work is done, we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly match every qualification listed.

Desired Experience

  • Familiarity with ECSS standards, including requirements management, compliance assessment and verification.

  • Experience developing engineering tools, automation or workflows that improve the productivity of other engineers.

  • Experience with structured documentation, configuration management and engineering change processes.

  • Experience working on spacecraft, launch vehicle or other safety-critical systems.

  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE), SysML or similar systems engineering tools is advantageous.

Diversity & Inclusion

At Dawn Aerospace, we believe that diverse teams build better solutions. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences are valued and supported to do their best work.

About Dawn Aerospace

Dawn Aerospace is a space transportation company with a purpose.

Our mission is to enable the next generation of space users by providing more sustainable and scalable ways to access and move around in space. We believe this access, in the form of a transportation network, will fundamentally change what’s possible from space. We currently focus on three areas of space transportation:

  • In-space propulsion

We're a leading supplier of turnkey green propulsion systems for various classes of satellites. Our systems utilise safe, accessible propellants and we have over 170 of these propulsion units on more than 40 operational satellites already. A further 200 units are in production.

  • In-space servicing

Coupled with our propulsion expertise, we are ensuring that our customers' satellites are refuellable. In the coming years, Dawn will offer a refueling service to enable life extension of customer satellites. This new market is aligned with our sustainability goal to ensue a clean and safe space for everyone!

  • Spaceplane

We are developing the fastest and highest-flying aircraft ever to take off from a runway, combining the extreme performance of rocket propulsion with the reusability of conventional airplanes to enable high-frequency, low-cost access to sub-orbital space.

Our international teams are distributed across four locations: the Netherlands, France, New Zealand, and the USA.
