AboutDeKalb Brilliance Academy : Designed with input from nearly 1,000 South DeKalb community members, DeKalb Brilliance Academy is a tuition-free, public K-8 charter school committed to building a fundamentally different kind of education. We currently serve grades K-6 and will add one grade per year (learn more about our founding journey here).

Our vision is that each child will know and leverage their unique brilliance to critically analyze the world around them and to design a better and more equitable future. We pursue this vision through our Career-connected Project-based Learning, where students learn not only from their teachers and peers, but also directly from scientists, lawyers, engineers, and designers. Our model is ambitious by design - and built to challenge the status quo in service of our students and community.

DeKalb Brilliance Academy: where the strength of our community nurtures the brilliance of our children.

About the before/after-care program (The Hive): The Hive is the before-care and after-school program at DeKalb Brilliance Academy. We serve scholars from the moment the building opens until the last family leaves, and our work is built on the belief that the hours outside the school day matter as much as the ones inside it. Our programming is guided by five pillars - Love, Learning, Leadership, Creativity, and Community - and by four commitments we make to each other: we care, we correct, we learn, we grow.

About the role: The Group Leader is a front-line program leader responsible for designing and facilitating engaging, structured, and age-appropriate activities during the after-school day. This role shapes the scholar experience, supports positive behavior, and brings the pillars to life through enrichment, movement, creativity, and group engagement. Group Leaders work directly with scholars and collaborate closely with site leadership to ensure activities are safe, engaging, inclusive, and aligned with program goals.

  • Position Group Leader: assigned to one grade band
  • Reports to Senior Program Director
  • Employment type: Part-time, hourly, non-exempt
  • Hours Approximately; 25 hours per week
  • Calendar: school days only
  • Benefits: This position does not include benefits or paid sick time

Responsibilities

Activity planning and delivery

  • Design, plan, and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate activities aligned with the pillars
  • Prepare daily activity plans that balance structure, creativity, movement, and scholar choice
  • Set up, manage, and reset your activity space before and after programming
  • Ensure activities are safe, inclusive, and accessible to every scholar in your group

Supervision and scholar engagement

  • Take paper attendance within the first five minutes of program
  • Move scholars at Level 0, with an adult positioned mid-to-back of the line
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with scholars while holding professional boundaries

Behavior support

  • Reinforce clear expectations and routines during every activity
  • Address minor concerns through redirection, coaching, and de-escalation
  • Use restorative language - we reset, we do not use time-out
  • Move a scholar's seat early, before a moment escalates
  • Log every behavior incident the same day it happens

Documentation and communication

  • Complete attendance, incident reports, and activity documentation accurately and on time
  • Communicate with families only as directed by program leadership
  • Keep your walkie on you and turned all the way up for your entire shift
  • Tell leadership before your shift, not after, if anything will affect your arrival

Materials, space, and closeout

  • Complete the nightly clean sweep: tables wiped, floor swept, all program materials removed, chairs in
  • Power P-boards fully off - not screen-off - and confirm the indicator light is out
  • Leave every shared space reset and ready for the school day the next morning
  • Be checked out by a member of the leadership team before you leave

Health, safety, and supervision

  • Maintain active supervision at all times - proximity, scanning, and positioning
  • Your back is never to scholars. Two adults in a space stand opposite each other, never side by side
  • Conduct headcounts at every transition, at every activity, and at dismissal
  • Know the allergies, medical needs, and safety plans of every scholar in your care
  • Follow all health, safety, and supervision policies in the Staff Handbook
  • Support emergency procedures and drills, and know your assignment on the Building Response Team

Mandated reporting and scholar protection

  • Serve and assume all responsibilities as a program-based mandated reporter
  • Report any suspected child abuse, neglect, or safety concern in accordance with Georgia law
  • Escalate safety, injury, abuse, or family matters to leadership immediately, even if the picture is incomplete
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion on all sensitive matters

This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.
