{"id":3128868,"url":"https://alion.io/job/desert-botanical-garden-gardener","title":"Gardener","company":{"id":1772943,"name":"Desert Botanical Garden","domain":"dbg.org","url":"https://alion.io/company/dbg-org","size_band":"51-200","is_staffing_agency":false,"employer_type":"direct","is_intermediary":false,"listed_via":null,"ats_vendor":"Paylocity","truth_index":null},"role":"Field & Service","role_family":"Field & Service","seniority":null,"employment_type":"full_time","work_mode":"on_site","remote_scope":null,"remote_scope_basis":null,"remote_working_hours":null,"hiring_geo_confidence":"structured","locations":["Phoenix, United States"],"countries":["US"],"hiring_countries":[],"hiring_countries_total":0,"salary":{"min":21,"max":null,"currency":"USD","period":"hour","gross":null,"usd_annual":42000},"salary_estimate":null,"experience_years_min":null,"visa_sponsorship":false,"relocation_package":false,"has_equity":false,"technologies":[],"status":"live","first_seen_at":"2026-10-22T22:17:03Z","employer_posted_date":"2026-10-23","last_verified_at":"2026-10-28T08:05:18Z","board_verified":true,"closed_at":null,"days_open":5,"trust":{"level":"ok","repost_count":null,"flags":[],"days_open":5},"description":"Description\nPosition Purpose\nA participating member of the Trail Horticulture team responsible for the health, care, and growth of plants used in the Garden’s displays, exhibits, and trails with the goal of achieving the highest level of excellence in alignment with best practices in horticultural care for desert plants.\nEssential Duties\nActively support the management and care for team areas ensuring that all plant beds meet the Garden’s standards of health, aesthetic, and cultivation.\nPerform appropriate horticulture related tasks as assigned by the Supervisor including, manual watering, detailing for highly visible beds and displays, minor irrigation maintenance for assigned areas, and tree and shrub pruning.\nActively support the care and health of the Garden’s accessioned plants in assigned areas including documentation, review and evaluation in collaboration with the Supervisor.\nProvide support for all departmental activities including plant sales, exhibit and display installations, and collecting trips.\nSupervise, manage, and communicate with volunteers working with the Garden Trail team.\nParticipates in departmental, Garden, and planning meetings; assist with reports and proposals; continue professional education and participation in professional organizations.\nPerform other duties as assigned.\nPay: $21.00 per hour\nRequirements\nCompetencies\nBachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, life sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience.\nBe able to work independently with direction from supervising horticulturist.\nExceptional time management, communication, and organizational skills.\nThe ability to solve problems using discretion and good judgment, high levels of personal motivation.\nAbility to work weekends and evenings when needed.\nValid Arizona driver’s license for cart training and use.\nPublic Garden experience a plus\nEquipment Used\nTypical office equipment. This role will also use small hand tools (loppers, pruners, pick axe, shovels, sharp shooter, etc.) and some power tools for landscaping maintenance and care.\nInternal Communication\nRegular communication with department and Garden staff and volunteers.\nExternal Communication\nInteraction with Garden visitors, plant sale customers and vendors.\nWorking Conditions\nMust be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read, and type. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder or scissor lift to 15’-20’. Frequently moves and lifts materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Consistently works in outside conditions that include inclement weather, humidity and extreme heat during summer months.
