This role is a key part of that evolution.\nRole Summary\nThe Accounting Manager leads core accounting operations and the monthly/year-end close; ensures accurate, timely financial reporting; and manages a team of three staff accountants. Our commitment to excellence stems from our personal integrity and from other defining attributes, which we call “Dewberry at Work,” that have inspired our employees to be successful for more than a half-century.\nThis will be a hybrid position located in our Fairfax, VA office.\nResponsibilities\nLead and manage the monthly and annual close, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, reconciliations, and account analysis, leveraging digital tools and automation for process improvement.\nOwn the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts; ensure proper accounting treatment across entries using advanced analytics and technology platforms.\nReview project financial performance and revenue recognition under ASC 606; proactively partner with Project Managers to resolve issues and drive financial accountability.\nEnsure timely issuance of accurate internal financial statements and management reports, utilizing scalable reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI.\nMaintain, update, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in alignment with GAAP, FAR (as applicable), and tax requirements.\nProactively identify accounting and compliance risks; design and implement mitigating controls, focusing on automation and digital solutions.\nLead and manage all external audits (financial, overhead, and others), ensuring audit readiness through digital documentation & process optimization.\nSupport government contracting requirements, including cost allowability, indirect rates, and audit-ready documentation.\nMap, standardize, document, and optimize core accounting processes; implement SOPs and controls to improve accuracy and efficiency, applying agile methodologies for continuous improvement.\nDrive system enhancements and integrations in partnership with IT (ERP/EPM upgrades, lease accounting module, payroll/bank integrations), ensuring seamless data flow and process automation.\nIdentify and execute automation opportunities (e.g. RPA, workflow tools, ETL platforms) to minimize manual effort and shorten close cycles.\nServe as a trusted financial partner to Operations and Project Management; interpret results, resolve issues, and provide actionable insights using predictive analytics.\nPerform variance analyses and deliver data-driven recommendations.\nCollaborate with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, and plan-to-actual analysis, leveraging cloud-based finance solutions.\nSupport development of scalable reporting and analytics using Power Query, Power BI, or similar platforms.\nEnsure data integrity across ERP (Deltek Vantagepoint), EPM (Planful), and key subledgers (AP, AR, Projects, Payroll).\nDemonstrate proven expertise in advanced Excel tools (Power Query/Power Pivot) for data modeling and analysis.\nLead, coach, and develop a team of three staff accountants; set clear goals provide regular, constructive feedback, and foster a culture of continuous learning and upskilling in digital finance tools.\nManage workload allocation, build depth and succession, and support skill development and career growth.\nBuild strong cross-functional relationships and communicate effectively across all levels of management.\nParticipate in agile project teams focused on finance transformation, systems upgrade, or process re-engineering.\nRequired Skills & Required Experience\nBachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA preferred.\n8-10 years of progressive accounting experience; 3-5 years of people-management experience.\nStrong command of US GAAP, including ASC 606 and ASC 842; solid understanding of internal controls.\nExperience in a project-based, professional services, engineering, or AEC environment preferred.\nGovernment contracting/FAR exposure is a plus.\nProven ability to develop and enforce accounting policies and procedures; excellent judgment and problem-solving skills.\nAdvanced Excel skills (PivotTables, Power Query/Power Pivot, complex formulas); proficiency with Word and PowerPoint.\nProven experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Planful EPM, and Power BI strongly preferred.\nRelevant certifications in agile environments or with agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban) is highly desirable.\nExceptional communication, stakeholder management, and time management skills; thrives under tight deadlines and organizational change.\n*At this time, Dewberry will not sponsor a new applicant for work authorization.\n*Dewberry is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
