At Diagnal, we are looking for a Technical Lead - Android who will drive the architecture, development, and delivery of high-performance media and sports streaming applications for global broadcasters and OTT platforms. As a key technology partner in delivering large-scale live and on-demand streaming solutions, you will lead a team of engineers while remaining hands-on in building scalable, reliable, and performance-optimized Android applications.
You will bring strong expertise in HLS streaming, live playback handling, adaptive bitrate streaming, and low-latency video delivery on the Android platform. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring exceptional playback reliability, consistently delivering more than 99% playback success rate across live and VOD content. You will also champion production stability by focusing on performance engineering, crash analysis, and observability, maintaining more than 99.5% crash-free users in live production environments.
You will collaborate closely with clients, product stakeholders, backend teams, and cross-functional partners to translate complex business requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions. This role demands deep technical expertise in Android performance engineering, memory management, leak detection, profiling, and debugging, along with proven experience leading and mentoring engineering teams in fast-paced, high-availability environments.
Responsibilities:
- Create simple, engaging, and high-performing video streaming applications across a wide range of Android devices, from low-end mobile devices to high-end smartphones, tablets, and large-screen TV platforms (Android TV / Fire TV).
- Architect and build scalable Android applications using modern Android development practices, including Kotlin, Jetpack libraries, and modular architecture.
- Lead client technical conversations, understand business and platform requirements, and translate them into scalable engineering solutions.
- Guide and mentor a team of Android developers, providing technical direction, performing code reviews, and promoting engineering best practices.
- Build large-scale digital entertainment products used by millions of users globally, ensuring high reliability and performance in production.
- Work in a fast-moving media environment, delivering frequent releases and rapid improvements based on user feedback and product insights.
- Develop and optimize high-quality video playback experiences using technologies such as HLS, DASH, DRM, adaptive bitrate streaming, and low-latency live playback.
- Partner closely with designers, product managers, QA engineers, DevOps, backend teams, third-party platform providers, and customers to deliver end-to-end streaming experiences.
- Ensure application stability and performance through profiling, crash analysis, observability, performance tuning, and memory optimization.
- Drive engineering quality through clean architecture, modularization, scalable code design, and strong documentation, ensuring long-term maintainability across teams.
- Establish and promote best practices in code quality, testing, and release management, including unit tests, integration tests, and UI automation.
- Work with analytics and observability platforms to monitor playback quality, user engagement, and application performance in production.
- Serve as a technical mentor and leader, helping grow the engineering team and raising the overall technical bar within the organization.
- Contribute to cross-platform and multi-technology initiatives when required by business needs, collaborating across different engineering teams.
Requirements:
- 5 or more years of experience with Android-based solutions in a project services or product engineering organization.
- Hands-on Android development experience using Kotlin and Java.
- Design and maintain scalable Android architecture using Kotlin, Jetpack libraries, and dependency injection with Hilt across multi-module projects.
- Experience developing highly polished consumer-facing apps with smooth interactivity directly from design assets.
- Published apps that are now online.
- Self-motivation and ability to manage your own time to get the job done at the high international quality levels we expect.
- An engineering degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience.
- A solid understanding of Android system fundamentals, application performance optimization, and backend integration.
- Prior experience working within the OTT apps, media, e-commerce, telecommunications, or similar large-scale consumer-facing industry.
