The intern will assist with the development, management, tracking, and continuous improvement of Process Safety Information (PSI), engineering records, design documentation, and project deliverables.This position provides exposure to engineering design, process safety management, document control, quality systems, and project execution in a fast-paced engineering and construction environment. The successful candidate will gain practical experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams while learning industry standards, engineering workflows, and information management practices that support safe and reliable facility operations.\nEssential Functions:\nAssist with the organization, tracking, storage, and retrieval of engineering and process safety documentation.\nSupport the maintenance of Process Safety Information (PSI) files, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment data sheets, operating procedures, and engineering calculations.\nHelp ensure engineering documents are properly reviewed, approved, issued, and archived in accordance with company procedures.\nMaintain document registers, metadata, numbering systems, revision histories, and transmittal records.\nAssist with document control activities for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup projects.\nSupport the collection and verification of vendor documentation, equipment manuals, material certifications, and technical submittals.\nParticipate in audits of engineering files to identify missing, outdated, or inconsistent documentation.\nAssist in developing and improving document management workflows, templates, and standards.\nSupport engineering teams by compiling technical information for Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Management of Change (MOC) activities, and other process safety initiatives.\nCoordinate information between internal engineering teams, contractors, consultants, and vendors.\nSupport implementation and maintenance of project information management systems, SharePoint sites, and document repositories.\nDevelop reports, tracking tools, and metrics related to engineering deliverables and process safety documentation status.\nContribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on information accuracy, accessibility, and compliance.\n\nRequired Skill s:\nStrong attention to detail and organizational skills.\nProficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.\nAbility to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a collaborative team environment.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\nInterest in engineering systems, industrial processes, process safety, and technical documentation.\nAbility to work independently while maintaining accuracy and consistency.\n\nPreferred Skills:\nFamiliarity with engineering drawings and technical documents such as PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and vendor submittals.\nExposure to document management systems, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Procore, or similar platforms.\nBasic understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), or Management of Change (MOC) concepts.\nKnowledge of engineering numbering systems and revision control practices.\nExperience with data organization, workflow management, or information systems.\nFamiliarity with industrial, chemical, renewable energy, oil & gas, manufacturing, or process plant environments.\nQualifications\nRequired Background:\nCurrently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, Information Management, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.\nExplore the Possibilities\nSouth Jersey Industries employs a diverse range of talent - from construction contractors to environmental specialists.
