Responsible for supporting vessel turnarounds, cargo operations, traffic management, and terminal maintenance activities, the role ensures that vessels are loaded and discharged safely, schedules are maintained, and customers receive a high-quality service. Working as part of a multi-skilled operational team, the Port Operative contributes to maintaining a safe working environment, protecting company and customer assets, and supporting the smooth flow of freight and passenger traffic through the port.\nKey responsibilities and duties:\nMooring and unmooring vessels safely and efficiently.\nLoading and discharging vessels in line with operational procedures whilst maximising ship fill and preventing damage to customer and company equipment.\nOperating approved vehicles, plant, and equipment including terminal tractors, tugs, forklifts, and other authorised machinery.\nSupporting vessel turnaround activities to ensure sailing schedules are achieved.\nManaging the movement and positioning of freight units and cargo within the terminal.\nMarshaling incoming and outgoing traffic through the port in a safe and professional manner.\nEnsuring terminal space is utilised effectively, including the secure parking of high-security loads.\nCompleting daily vehicle and equipment inspections, reporting defects, and maintaining accurate records.\nReporting all incidents, damage, and near misses in accordance with company procedures.\nAssisting with terminal maintenance activities and emergency repairs where required.\nSupporting oil spill response and environmental protection measures.\nHandling luggage, stores, refuse, and other materials moving on and off vessels.\nMaintaining high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness, and safety across the terminal.\nWorking in compliance with company policies, health and safety legislation, dock and harbour regulations, and security requirements.\nContinuously identifying opportunities to improve working practices and operational efficiency.\nPromoting the company's values, behaviours, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.\nUndertaking any other duties appropriate to the role as required by the business.\nThe ideal candidate will:\nDemonstrate a strong commitment to safety and safe working practices.\nBe comfortable working in a physically demanding outdoor environment in varying weather conditions.\nHave excellent teamwork and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across operational teams.\nBe flexible and adaptable, capable of responding to changing operational demands.\nTake ownership of their responsibilities and demonstrate a proactive approach to work.\nBe reliable, dependable, and committed to maintaining high attendance standards.\nHave the ability to follow procedures while also exercising sound judgement when required.\nDisplay a positive attitude and focus on delivering excellent customer service.\nBe willing to undertake training and develop skills across a range of port operations activities.\nDesirable:\nPrevious experience working within a port, maritime, logistics, transport, warehousing, or operational environment.\nExperience operating plant, machinery, forklifts, terminal tractors, or similar equipment.\nFull UK Driving Licence.\nRight to work in the UK.\nAbility to obtain security clearance.\nKnowledge of health and safety requirements within an operational environment.\nRelevant plant, equipment, or operational certifications.\nIf you have further questions, then please reach out to the hiring manager Miki Lock for an informal discussion.\nAt P&O Ferries we want you to be you.
