The role is based at DroneShield's Sydney headquarters, which houses corporate, commercial, engineering, and operational teams supporting the company's global growth and customer base. 

About the role  

DroneShield is seeking a Technical Writer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney, New South Wales. The position will report to the Documentation and Graphics Lead. It represents a unique opportunity to produce written material in a novel technology space.

The role is primarily focused on technical documentation of hardware and software products. It provides an exceptional chance for a results-driven individual to excel in a niche but rapidly growing sector. You will work collaboratively with engineers, testers, product managers, and usability experts to refine the end-user experience.

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations  

• Research, author, edit, proofread, and maintain technical documentation, including user manuals, quick-start guides, release notes, technical reference material, and related source content.
• Apply exceptional attention to detail to technical accuracy, terminology, content structure, and presentation, ensuring documentation conveys information clearly and effectively to the end user.
• Gather and absorb highly technical details to translate into clear, concise, and comprehensive documentation which can be easily understood by both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Liaise with key business stakeholders to understand documentation requirements, and with engineers/technical SMEs to ensure documentation is comprehensive and accurate. Collaborate with graphic designers to support professional, readable, on-brand documentation across production workflows.
• Review and evaluate documentation to ensure it is fit for purpose. Update existing documentation and source content as needed, incorporating review feedback, release changes, and changes to products or services while maintaining consistency across related materials.
• Manage and communicate timelines and priorities in line with guidance from stakeholders, being able to respond to ad-hoc requests whilst maintaining high-quality standards.
• Organise, maintain, and provide first-line support for documentation repositories and mixed publishing workflows where they apply.
• Maintain source-controlled content, structured documentation files, reusable content, and generated artefacts to support accessible, consistent, compliant, and up-to-date documentation.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills  

• Demonstrated ability to write and format effective customer-facing documentation for technical and non-technical audiences, including user manuals, quick-start guides, release notes, and technical reference material.
• 5+ years’ proven experience writing in a technology, engineering, defence, hardware, software, or complex systems environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in a communication-related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience working in product development, engineering, or release-driven documentation environments.
• Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, user-focused language for internal and external audiences.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical SMEs, designers, and business stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of technical writing principles, topic-based authoring, structured content, content reuse, source-controlled documentation workflows, and documentation maintainability.
• Comfortable working with markup languages such as Markdown and XML, Git-based documentation repositories, and command-line documentation workflows.
• Able to run, validate, troubleshoot, and make targeted improvements to documentation build or publishing processes.
• Comfortable maintaining Python-based documentation scripts, including running scripts, interpreting outputs, identifying issues, and making or coordinating targeted changes.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing documentation priorities, and maintain progress across multiple projects and review cycles.
• Ability to follow established style guides, terminology, spelling conventions, product language, and export-control requirements.
