Dyson is a technology company founded in 1991 by James Dyson after he built more than five thousand prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner that no established manufacturer would license. It applies high-speed digital motors and airflow engineering across vacuum cleaners, hair care products including the Supersonic and Airwrap, air purifiers, lighting and headphones, and sells almost entirely direct to consumers at premium prices. The company moved its head office from Wiltshire to Singapore in 2019 to sit closer to its Asian manufacturing and markets, remains privately held by the Dyson family, and funds an engineering university at its Malmesbury campus.

About us

Dyson's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) strategy is transforming how product information, engineering processes and digital capabilities are managed across the Product Development organisation. As Teamcenter evolves into the authoritative system of record for product definition, engineering change, release governance and lifecycle traceability, effective management of Bills of Material (BoM), product structures and configuration governance is critical to ensuring product integrity, traceability and delivery confidence.

The Principal Engineer - BoM & Configuration Management is responsible for defining, governing and continuously improving Dyson's BoM and Configuration Management capabilities.

The role acts as Dyson's subject matter expert and capability owner for product structures, configuration governance, product definition traceability and associated engineering lifecycle processes. Working closely with Engineering functions, RDD IT, PLM Product Ownership and Engineering Process Owners, the role ensures Dyson's product definition and configuration management processes remain effective, scalable and aligned to future digital thread ambitions.

About the role

Capability Ownership & Governance

  • Promote adoption of industry best practices for product definition, configuration governance and lifecycle control across Product Development.

  • Define process performance measures and monitor capability effectiveness.

  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency, product traceability and configuration integrity through enhanced process design.

  • Support organisational compliance with defined engineering lifecycle practices.

Digital Thread & PLM Integration

  • Collaborate with the PLM Business Product Owner to ensure Teamcenter and connected platforms effectively support BoM and Configuration Management processes.

  • Define business requirements supporting future digital thread capabilities, product structure governance and configuration traceability.

  • Support development of integrated engineering lifecycle workflows linking product definition, configuration, change, release, manufacturing and traceability activities.

  • Ensure process requirements are appropriately represented within PLM transformation initiatives.

  • Provide subject matter expertise supporting future capability roadmaps and platform enhancements.

Stakeholder Engagement & Capability Development

  • Build strong partnerships across NPI, Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory, RDD IT and Product Development teams.

  • Facilitate governance forums, working groups and capability reviews.

  • Develop guidance, supporting materials and best practice recommendations.

  • Support organisational adoption of new processes, tools and ways of working.

  • Contribute to training, communications and capability development activities associated with process transformation initiatives.

Assurance, Risk & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor process adoption, compliance and effectiveness across Product Development.

  • Identify capability risks, gaps and opportunities for improvement.

  • Support audits, assessments and governance reviews where required.

  • Use data, stakeholder feedback and operational experience to drive capability enhancement.

  • Promote a culture of configuration control, product integrity, traceability and evidence-based engineering decision making.
