Dyson is a technology company founded in 1991 by James Dyson after he built more than five thousand prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner that no established manufacturer would license. It applies high-speed digital motors and airflow engineering across vacuum cleaners, hair care products including the Supersonic and Airwrap, air purifiers, lighting and headphones, and sells almost entirely direct to consumers at premium prices. The company moved its head office from Wiltshire to Singapore in 2019 to sit closer to its Asian manufacturing and markets, remains privately held by the Dyson family, and funds an engineering university at its Malmesbury campus.

Introduction:

Dyson began twenty one years ago with James Dyson and a handful of engineers questioning everyday products, thinking differently and making them better. We are now the world's number one vacuum cleaner manufacturer in the UK, US, Japan, Europe and Australasia.

We've even branched out to improving commercial technology that frustrates us. The Dyson Air blade hand dryer dries hands in ten seconds, it’s also the most hygienic and energy efficient hand dryer available. A fan, Air Multiplier, with no blades or grille. And most recently, Supersonic, Dyson’s first-ever hair dryer that has taken the world by storm.

There are over 4000 in the world and we’re all inventive and hugely passionate about what we do. At our Development Centre in Johor Bahru, Malaysia & Singapore there are almost 1600 of us, a mixture of engineers and support staff, we are Dyson people that are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. Our teams will continue to grow as Dyson ramp up forays into different areas.

Technical Program Management (TPM) Team: NPI Project Delivery

The TPM team oversees end to end delivery of New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.

  • Each TPM Project Manager (TPM) is assigned an NPI project within a specific category.
  • The TPM evaluates project complexity and collaborates with key engineering functions to allocate necessary resources.
  • The TPM establishes critical engineering checkpoints to track progress and secure senior management approval.
  • Beyond engineering reviews, the TPM holds weekly project meetings with their team.
  • TPM manage project CAPEX when needed, ensuring spending stays within budget and requesting additional funds when needed.
  • Strong coordination and collaboration across engineering teams are essential; TPM must steer this and make tough decisions when required.
  • The TPM is responsible for mapping and achieving functional milestones at each checkpoint.
  • Success requires thriving in a fast paced, evolving environment and delivering optimal solutions within deadlines.
  • The TPM works closely with Operations to install production capacities at the right time.
  • TPM are committed team players: they’re flexible, proactive, and willing to exceed expectations.
  • TPMs collaborate cross-functionally to deliver DF(X) and design to cost initiatives, ensuring project goals are met.

TPM Responsibilities for NPI Projects

TPM Project lead will be assigned to individual project.

  • Assess NPI complexity and create a resource plan, secure buy in from engineering functions and coordinate staffing.
  • Set key checkpoints and engage stakeholders for their approval and input.
  • Guide engineering teams to define their deliverables and clear milestones, including relevant design contributions.
  • Ensure each function integrates required protocols, such as IQ/OQ/PQ or DFM and Mold Flow analysis, into their plans. Align with Operations on project goals and deliverables.
  • Hold regular NPI review and share project updates with senior management.
  • Build strong relationships with teams outside engineering, especially RDD, Operations and outsource procurement, to support NPI success.
  • Maintain a project tracker covering health, timeline adherence, capital spending, DF(X), design to cost and risk projections.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive culture across the project team.
  • Provide key insights from Manufacturing and Operations perspectives.
  • Act as the escalation point for challenges, driving swift resolution.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Demonstrates a strong drive to learn and challenge existing production test and assembly methods.
  • Applies solid engineering judgement beyond their core discipline.
  • Has managed, directly or indirectly, a team of at least five people.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision.
  • Brings at least five years of relevant NPI project experience.
  • Experienced in regulated environments, including protocol driven processes like IQ/OQ/PQ.
  • Familiar with the challenges of outsourced operations.
  • PMP certification is an advantage.
