We build and operate traffic management and security capabilities across edge and service layers, including PoP strategy, caching, Kubernetes networking, and reliability improvements based on monitoring insights.\nRole Summary\nAs a Traffic Engineering Architect, you will own architecture and technical direction across eBay’s traffic engineering platform, spanning traffic management, load balancing, service connectivity, PoP/caching optimization, and traffic security (rate limiting, bot mitigation, etc.). You will lead cross-team design, guide execution on critical initiatives, and drive measurable improvements in latency, availability, resilience, and security.\nKey Responsibilities\nDefine architecture and technical strategy for global traffic systems: traffic management, load balancing, service connectivity, PoP optimization, caching, and traffic security controls.\n\nArchitect and deliver rate limiting and bot mitigation solutions across edge/service layers in partnership with Security.\n\nDesign and build high-performance, low-latency distributed systems using C/C++ and Go (Java in relevant components as needed).\n\nDrive Kubernetes networking and platform patterns at scale, including CNI integrations, service mesh, IPAM, and production-grade deployment models.\n\nOwn technical tradeoffs across performance, scalability, reliability, security, operability, maintainability, and delivery timelines.\n\nEstablish/advance observability and engineering metrics; use production signals to improve SLOs, reduce incidents, and increase efficiency.\n\nLead operational excellence: incident prevention, resiliency design, capacity/performance tuning, and automated remediation where appropriate.\n\nAlign roadmaps and execution across Product, Infrastructure, SRE/Operations, and Security; resolve cross-team dependencies and drive technical consensus.\n\nMentor senior engineers/tech leads through architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews; raise engineering standards and consistency.\n\nContribute to innovation via open-source engagement, patents, and forward-looking exploration relevant to traffic systems.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).\n\n15+ years of software engineering experience with significant depth in networking/traffic engineering, distributed systems, and/or cyber security.\n\nStrong proficiency in C/C++ and Go (Java acceptable/valuable for specific subsystems); experience building production-grade, high-performance systems.\n\nDeep knowledge of Linux networking, traffic management fundamentals, and systems performance optimization.\n\nStrong experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure at scale.\n\nProven experience designing secure, scalable, observable distributed platforms and operating them in production.\n\nDemonstrated cross-team technical leadership: driving architecture across multiple systems, influencing partners, and delivering large initiatives.\n\nStrong communication, mentoring, and technical decision-making skills in ambiguous environments.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience with Envoy, service mesh, control plane/data plane architectures, NGINX/HAProxy, SDN, eBPF, or comparable technologies.\n\nExperience with rate limiting, bot management, abuse prevention, and traffic security patterns (edge and service).\n\nBackground in PoP design, caching strategies, and internet-scale traffic optimization.\n\nVendor tool integration experience and operation in globally distributed environments.\n\nOpen-source contributions, patents, or externally visible technical leadership.\n\nWhat Success Looks Like\nImproved global traffic platform outcomes (latency, throughput, availability, resilience, security).\n\nReduced incident frequency/impact through architecture, observability, and operational rigor.\n\nStrong architectural alignment across teams with higher engineering quality and execution velocity.\n\nAdditional Details\neBay is an equal opportunity employer.
