This is a junior, developmental role focused on learning project risk management, maintaining accurate risk documentation, and supporting routine assessments and reporting.\nThe selected candidate will learn risk management practices aligned with DOE G 413.3-7A, Risk Management Guide, and the capital asset project process under DOE O 413.3B and applicable institutional requirements. Work will consist of clearly defined assignments with regular direction, mentoring, and review. Training will include identifying and documenting risks, supporting risk assessments, and learning the fundamentals of Monte Carlo analysis.\nResponsibilities\nAssist with identifying and documenting risks that could affect project scope, cost, schedule, or technical performance.\n\nWork with risk owners and project team members to gather information and draft risk statements, including causes, potential consequences, and supporting assumptions.\n\nUpdate and maintain risk registers, including risk owners, probability and impact assessments, handling actions, due dates, and status updates.\n\nParticipate in risk review meetings, document discussion outcomes, and follow up on assigned action items.\n\nLearn to assess risk probability and potential impacts using established criteria and guidance from experienced analysts.\n\nDevelop an understanding of the capital asset project lifecycle, including critical decisions and how risk management supports planning, execution, and closeout.\n\nLearn the fundamentals of cost and schedule risk analysis, including estimate uncertainty, probability distributions, and Monte Carlo simulation.\n\nAssist with gathering and checking analysis inputs, running established risk models under direct guidance, and documenting assumptions and results for review.\n\nPrepare routine risk summaries and reporting materials using established formats.\n\nIdentify missing or inconsistent information and bring questions or potential changes in risk exposure to senior staff for review.\n\nCollaborate with project managers, project controls staff, engineers, and other team members to understand project activities and support accurate risk documentation.\n\nQualifications\nBachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, project management, business, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.\nBasic understanding of project management concepts, including scope, cost, schedule, and deliverables, gained through education, training, or work experience.\n\nAbility to organize information, review data for completeness and consistency, and maintain accurate records.\n\nClear written and verbal communication skills.\n\nBasic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other standard office applications.\n\nAbility to follow established procedures, manage assigned tasks, and work collaboratively.\n\nWillingness to ask questions, incorporate feedback, and develop skills in project risk management and quantitative analysis.\n\nDesired:\nIntroductory exposure to project controls, engineering, construction, data analysis, or a related field through coursework, internships, or employment.\n\nFamiliarity with basic statistics and probability concepts.\n\nExposure to DOE projects or capital asset project processes.\n\nTraining and Level of Responsibility\nPrior experience with Monte Carlo simulation or specialized risk software is not required. Training, mentoring, and supervised practical experience will be provided.\nThe selected candidate will initially perform routine support tasks, with assignments increasing in complexity as skills develop. Risk assessments, model inputs, analysis results, and reporting products will be reviewed by experienced personnel.
