The Senior Software Developer also mentors and guides other developers.\nMinimum Requirements\nQualifications / Education\nA Bachelor’s degree or equivalent NQF 7 qualification (Advanced Diploma or Bachelor of Technology) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. \nAn Honours degree (NQF 8) or relevant certifications (e.g. AWS/Azure cloud, Kubernetes, security) will be an advantage. \nExperience\n6-8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience designing, building, and maintaining web applications across the full stack in a modern software environment, including frontend and backend development. \nMinimum of 5 years with JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js, or Angular). \nMinimum of 5 years of backend development with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI. \nMinimum of 4 years’ experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases in a production environment, including schema design and performance tuning. \nProven experience architecting and delivering scalable, secure, high-performing systems. \nExperience leading technical initiatives and mentoring junior and intermediate developers. \nDuties and Responsibilities\nApplication Architecture, Development & Maintenance\nLead the design, architecture, development, testing, and implementation of full stack solutions, including frontend interfaces, backend services, and integrations with other systems. \nDesign, build, and govern scalable, secure RESTful/GraphQL APIs and the data models and databases that support them. \nOwn the technical direction of modules, workflows, and system integrations, so that solutions stay maintainable and aligned with the enterprise architecture. \nMake and document sound technical trade-offs on performance, security, scalability, and cost. \nAGILE Practices\nTake a leading role in AGILE ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives), giving technical input on estimates and feasibility. \nWork with product owners and stakeholders to refine user stories, define acceptance criteria, and break down complex requirements. \nEnsure the team delivers high-quality code within agreed timelines, and identify delivery risks early. \nDevOps Practices\nDesign, implement, and improve CI/CD pipelines and release processes using Azure DevOps (or similar). \nDrive automation of build, test, and deployment steps, and set up application monitoring, logging, and alerting. \nLead the response to production incidents and make sure the system stays stable and recovers quickly. \nTechnical Leadership\nDefine, promote, and enforce coding standards, best practices, and architectural patterns. \nLead code reviews and give constructive feedback to raise code quality across the team. \nMentor, coach, and support junior and intermediate developers. \nEvaluate and recommend modern frontend and backend frameworks, tools, and technologies. \nLead technical design sessions and own technical design decisions. \nCollaboration & Communication\nProduce and maintain technical designs, architecture documentation, processes, and configurations. \nWork closely with cross-functional teams and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions. \nCommunicate progress, risks, and technical trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. \nProblem Solving & Troubleshooting\nDiagnose and resolve complex technical issues across the stack. \nLead root cause analysis and put in place long-term corrective and preventive actions. \nEnsure production systems are highly available, performant, and secure. \nContinuous Improvement\nDrive improvements to tools, processes, and practices that increase development efficiency and quality. \nLead the development and evolution of internal frameworks, reusable components, and standards. \nPursue continuous professional development and share knowledge across the team. \nProjects & User Support\nLead the technical delivery of projects on schedule and within scope, keeping stakeholders informed. \nOversee user support so that SLA targets are met and escalated issues are resolved efficiently. \nLead knowledge transfer and support end-user and team training. \nFunctional and Behavioural Competencies\nTechnical / Functional Competencies:\nFrontend Expertise: Advanced proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js, or Angular) alongside HTML5, CSS3/Tailwind, and modern state management, with the ability to define frontend architecture and performance standards. \nBackend Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI, and with designing scalable, secure RESTful/GraphQL APIs and service architectures. \nDatabases & DevOps: Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL, including data modelling, schema design, query optimisation, and performance tuning; experience with NoSQL databases, cloud environments (AWS), Docker, and container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes) is an advantage. \nStrong knowledge of web security, performance optimisation, and modern architecture patterns (e.g. microservices, event-driven, modular monoliths);
