Egis is a French engineering, consulting and operations group working on transport, buildings, water, energy and urban development projects worldwide. It designs and supervises infrastructure such as motorways, rail lines, metro systems, airports and bridges, and unusually also operates assets once they are built, running airports and road concessions rather than handing them over at completion. Headquartered near Paris and majority owned by the state investment bank Caisse des Depots alongside its own employees, the group employs tens of thousands of engineers and project managers across more than one hundred countries.

Company Description

Egis is a leading global architecture, consulting, construction engineering and operating firm. We work side by side with clients to build a more balanced, sustainable and resilient world.

Omnia Projects, part of the Egis Group, are a UK-based engineering consultancy specialising in electricity Transmission and Distribution (T&D) providing engineering, project management and technical assurance.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will play a key role in developing and shaping future electricity network investment projects across the distribution network.

Working within the Specification & Design function, you will be responsible for the front-end engineering, feasibility assessment, optioneering and development of EHV infrastructure projects, ensuring schemes are technically sound, fully specified and ready for successful delivery.

The role combines strong technical engineering expertise with project development skills and requires a thorough understanding of substation plant, network infrastructure and engineering standards across voltage levels from 11kV up to 132kV.

Projects will include network reinforcement, substation asset replacement, customer connections and new infrastructure developments at Primary, Bulk Supply Point and Supply Point Substations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and define EHV infrastructure projects from early-stage concept through to delivery-ready status.
  • Lead feasibility studies, engineering assessments and optioneering activities.
  • Develop technical specifications for substation plant replacement, reinforcement and customer connection schemes.
  • Produce project scopes, technical requirements, cost estimates and delivery strategies.
  • Identify and assess engineering risks, constraints and opportunities during project development.
  • Coordinate engineering surveys, investigations and stakeholder inputs required to support project definition.
  • Support business case development and investment justification activities.
  • Ensure projects comply with applicable engineering standards, safety requirements and network policies.
  • Provide technical guidance and challenge throughout the project development process.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure proposed solutions meet operational and customer requirements.
  • Support the handover of fully specified projects into delivery teams.

About You

You are a technically strong electrical engineer with significant experience of EHV substations and electricity network infrastructure.

You enjoy solving engineering problems, developing practical solutions and influencing projects in their early stages before construction begins.

You are comfortable evaluating multiple technical options, managing stakeholder input and producing clear, deliverable engineering proposals.

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Degree, HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of CDM requirements and engineering governance processes.
  • Working knowledge of utility industry standards and engineering best practice.
  • Detailed knowledge of EHV substation plant and equipment operating at 11kV, 33kV, 66kV and 132kV.
  • Experience developing projects involving:
    • Substation asset replacement
    • Network reinforcement
    • Customer connections
    • New-build substation developments
  • Experience working at Primary, Bulk Supply Point and Supply Point Substations.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Power transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Protection and control interfaces
    • Substation primary plant
    • Associated civil infrastructure
  • Experience developing engineering specifications and project scopes.
  • Knowledge of AIS and GIS substations and associated design considerations.
  • Experience undertaking feasibility studies, optioneering and project definition activities.
  • Ability to assess technical risk, programme impacts and delivery constraints.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid role, involving a blend of home working, time spent at Client and Omnia Projects offices, with regular site visits across the North East region.

Key office locations include:

  • Client: Newcastle, Sunderland, York, Castleford, Hull, Sheffield
  • Omnia Projects: Northallerton & Leeds

These are long-term roles. Engagement can be on a PAYE, Limited Company (Inside IR35) or contingent worker basis.
