Job Brief

The Senior Field Service Technician is an experienced calibration professional responsible for independently performing complex calibration, verification, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation services on a variety of laboratory, manufacturing, and process instrumentation. This role is distinguished by a higher level of technical proficiency, broader calibration capability, and the ability to resolve more complex measurement and equipment issues with limited supervision.

The position will primarily work during normal business hours of 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, but may require occasional off-hours, weekend work, and travel based on customer and business needs.

The goal of the Senior Field Service Technician is to provide advanced, reliable calibration and technical service support while maintaining a high level of quality, compliance, technical accuracy, and customer service at customer sites and within Ellab facilities.

Core Responsibilities

The Senior Field Service Technician is responsible for:

  • Perform calibration, verification, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and upgrade services on customer equipment in accordance with approved specifications, work instructions, and technical requirements.
  • Independently perform complex calibration activities across multiple measurement disciplines and equipment types within assigned qualifications and authorizations.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of measurement principles, specifications, test point and tolerance selection, metrological traceability, measurement uncertainty, and out-of-tolerance evaluation when performing calibration activities.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, instrumentation, and measurement-related issues using sound technical judgment and established procedures.
  • Interpret manufacturer documentation, customer specifications, technical procedures, schematics, and reference documents to determine appropriate calibration and service requirements.
  • Interface directly with customers regarding equipment status, calibration results, maintenance findings, technical issues, service recommendations, and project updates.
  • Maintain accurate and complete service documentation, calibration certificates, technical records, and project information to support quality review, invoicing, reporting, and project closeout.
  • Identify and appropriately escalate out-of-tolerance conditions, technical discrepancies, procedural gaps, or quality concerns encountered during calibration activities.
  • Serve as a technical resource to peers by sharing calibration knowledge, troubleshooting experience, and discipline-specific expertise when requested, without direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Support technical evaluations, method improvements, capability expansion, and continuous improvement activities related to assigned calibration disciplines.
  • Support and maintain company standards, tools, rental equipment, service inventory, and assigned test equipment.
  • Follow all customer, internal, ISO/IEC 17025, GMP, and safety requirements while performing field and laboratory service activities.
  • Maintain and expand technical qualifications and knowledge of calibration principles, industry standards, regulations, and best practices through continuous learning and training.

Core Responsibilities (continued)

  • Support in-lab calibration activities and assist with metrology laboratory workload and backlog reduction when not assigned to field service projects.
  • Identify opportunities for additional calibration, maintenance, repair, and other service offerings to support customer needs and business growth.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience in calibration, instrumentation, maintenance, field service, or related technical field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency performing calibrations across multiple measurement disciplines and/or advanced equipment types with limited supervision.
  • Previous experience in a GMP-regulated environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of measurement principles, including measurement uncertainty, traceability, calibration intervals, test uncertainty, and out-of-tolerance reporting.
  • Understanding of preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair methodologies for equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment specifications.
  • Familiarity with FDA 21 CFR Part 11, 210, 211, and 820, ISO 9001, and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, manage assigned field service jobs, and exercise sound technical judgement within established quality and procedural requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer sites.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
