With support from more than 30 countries, laboratories at six locations across Europe and thousands of scientists and engineers working together, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a powerhouse of biological expertise. The intergovernmental organisation, headquartered in Heidelberg, was founded in 1974 with the mission of promoting molecular biology research in Europe, training young scientists, and developing new technologies.

EMBL is among the world’s highest ranked scientific research organisations aimed to explore the secrets of life. EMBL integrates 28 member states and employs close to 1800 people across its six research sites in Barcelona, Cambridge (Hinxton), Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, and Rome. Its headquarters is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and integrate both research groups and core facilities.

Training of the next generation of scientists is one of EMBL’s key missions.

The EMBL Corporate Partnership Programme invites applications for short-term fellowships to enable junior level scientific visitors (active PhD/postdoc fellows) to carry out experimental projects with an EMBL host research group, thereby allowing them to build new networks, experience the international and interactive environment at EMBL, in addition to experiencing progress of their own research goals.

TheseEMBL CPP visitor fellowships are administered by the Scientific Visitor Programme Office to provide logistic and organisational support to successful awardees before and during their stay. The funds are provided as reimbursements against travel and accommodation cost and are flexible with other funding sources available to the awardees (i.e. can act as a top-up) - as long as all sources of funding are declared to the Scientific Visitor Programme office during application or post award.

The awardees must be

- Currently employed as a Ph.D or a postdoctoral researcher at a recognised institution of research or education, anywhere around the world (except non-sanctioned countries)

- Must be employed and return to home institution upon completion of project at EMBL

Important points to consider:

- No restriction on age, gender, nationality, scientific background or current location

- Visitors to EMBL Core Facilities or EMBL-EBI service teams are not covered through this fellowship scheme.

- If based in an EMBL Member State, consider applying to the Christian Boulin fellowships to visit EMBL Core Facilities or other alternative schemes listed on our webpage

- Only applications for minimum stay of one month to a maximum stay of six months will be considered

- While priority will be given to support first time visitors to EMBL research teams, this is not an exclusion criteria and candidates previous visits to EMBL should be clearly highlighted in their filled in application form.

- Applications are open throughout the year with deadlines every three months on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December.

- Fellowships which have not been taken up through travel to the EMBL host group within 6 months of the award date shall be considered as lapsed. Such candidates need to re-apply with an updated application.

A completed application package contains the following documents:

  • completed application form (available from the EMBL CPP fellowships website)
  • complete CV with your publications (if any) up-to-date and indexed in ORCID
  • confirmation of your visit from the EMBL hosting group leader
  • a support letter from your supervisor at your home institute
