Work is organized around clearly defined problems instead of sprint ceremonies, and engineers are trusted to find the best path forward, adapt as they learn, and own the outcome.\nTech Environment\nTypescript\n\nReact\n\nNext.js\n\nNode.js\n\nPostgreSQL\n\nFull-stack monolith architecture\n\nAutomated preview deployments with mocked services and isolated, production-like data\n\nEvent-driven and asynchronous systems\n\nWorkflow tools such as Kafka, Temporal, or Inngest\n\nAI-assisted development and workflow automation\n\nResponsibilities\nArchitecture and Technical Direction\nOwn the architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems across the full stack.\n\nPartner with the CTO to define and execute the long-term engineering strategy.\n\nTranslate business strategy into practical technical roadmaps, and respectfully push back when there's a better approach.\n\nGuide data modeling and system design with a focus on scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.\n\nReliability and Automation\nStrengthen reliability through monitoring, service-level objectives, incident response, and blameless postmortems with measurable follow-through.\n\nTurn manual work (deployments, data fixes, reporting, reviews, documentation) into automated, scalable systems.\n\nEnsure systems meet security, privacy, audit, and compliance requirements for sensitive data.\n\nLeadership\nSet engineering standards and lead design and code reviews without becoming a bottleneck.\n\nMentor engineers to grow their technical judgment, ownership, and problem-solving.\n\nTake on cross-functional technical challenges that lack a clear owner and drive them to completion.\n\nBuild alignment across U.S. and international engineering teams, and represent engineering with product and executive leadership.\n\nQualifications\n8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time as a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leader.\n\nExperience in a startup or growth-stage environment where you owned outcomes, not just assigned work.\n\nDeep expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.\n\nStrong database fundamentals: schema design, transactions, locking, query performance, and data integrity.\n\nA track record of designing and supporting business-critical systems such as workflows, integrations, financial transactions, or sensitive data.\n\nExperience making major architecture decisions and clearly explaining the trade-offs.\n\nExperience scaling a product as customers, markets, and requirements expand.\n\nSolid grounding in reliability, monitoring, and incident response.\n\nClear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex ideas to non-technical audiences.\n\nA thoughtful approach to AI tools that boosts productivity without sacrificing ownership, oversight, or quality.\n\nComfort operating with high autonomy and ownership outside a traditional Agile or Scrum framework.\n\nNice to Have Skills\nEvent-driven, asynchronous, or workflow-heavy systems (Kafka, Temporal, Inngest, or similar)\n\nScaling software across multiple markets or jurisdictions\n\nRegulated or compliance-focused environments\n\nHelping an organization move from outsourced engineering to a strong in-house team\n\nBuilding internal platforms or developer productivity tooling\n\nPrior experience with Shape Up\n\nOur Vetting Process\nAt Emergent Staffing, we work hard to find the software engineers who are the right fit for our clients.
