About the Role
Working within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, you will take ownership of mechanical design activities across the product development lifecycle, ensuring our instruments are robust, reliable, cost-effective and suitable for demanding operating conditions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Mechanical design: Develop concepts, detailed designs, components, sub-assemblies and complete instruments using SolidWorks and PDM.
- Design for manufacture: Apply DFM and value engineering principles to reduce cost, part count and complexity while maintaining performance, quality and serviceability.
- Prototyping and validation: Support prototype assembly, component evaluation, system testing and product validation.
- Engineering analysis: Apply your knowledge of materials selection, thermal stability, fluid mechanics and mechanical design for harsh industrial environments.
- Design assurance: Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, DFMEA and accelerated life testing.
- Technical documentation: Produce and maintain manufacturing drawings, design records, test reports and engineering documentation.
- Production support: Maintain engineering data, including parts and bills of materials (BOMs), and support production changes and ongoing product improvements.
- Cross-functional working: Collaborate with electronics, firmware, operations, service and commercial teams to deliver designs that meet technical and business requirements.
- Customer and supplier engagement: Visit industrial sites to understand operating conditions and work with suppliers on component development, qualification and improvement.
You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of existing products, helping enhance performance, reliability and manufacturability throughout their service life.
Your Skills and Experience
We are looking for a technically strong, hands-on engineer who can take ownership of mechanical design challenges and work effectively across disciplines.
Essential requirements

- Extensive mechanical design experience within a new product development environment.
- Experience designing instruments, sensors or similar products, ideally for demanding industrial applications.
- Strong 3D CAD skills, preferably SolidWorks, with experience using PDM systems.
- Knowledge of materials selection, thermal stability and fluid mechanics.
- Practical experience of design for manufacture and value engineering.
- Experience in prototype development, mechanical testing and product validation.
- Understanding of the full product development process, from concept through to production and product support.
- Familiarity with design reviews, DFMEA, risk assessment and accelerated life testing.
- A broad understanding of electro-mechanical product development, including mechanical, electronic, software and manufacturing considerations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable requirements
- Experience developing process monitoring instruments or environmental monitoring equipment.
- Practical experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Experience designing equipment for hazardous areas in accordance with ATEX and IECEx requirements.
- Experience with ERP systems, preferably Sage X3.
- Experience working with industrial customers and suppliers.
- Awareness of optics and their application in measurement instruments.
