You'll lead the development of our patient- and clinician-facing applications, creating the interfaces through which people interact with our implantable brain-computer interface and soft robotic glove.\nThis is a hands-on engineering role combining strong technical expertise with exceptional attention to user experience. You'll own application architecture and implementation, working closely with UX designers, engineers, clinicians, and researchers to turn complex medical technology into simple, reliable applications that meet the expectations of a regulated medical device.\nLocation\nThis role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work on site from our Alameda headquarters 2-3 days a week.\nWhat You’ll Do\nMobile Application Development & Product Experience\nLead the architecture, development, and delivery of our patient- and clinician-facing Android applications.\n\nBuild beautiful, responsive mobile interfaces with exceptional attention to visual quality, interaction design, performance, and usability.\n\nCollaborate with UX designers to turn designs and prototypes into polished applications, contributing to product and interaction design decisions.\n\nWork with clinicians, researchers, and patients to understand their needs, prototype solutions, and refine applications through feedback.\n\nDesign for accessibility, particularly for people with motor impairments.\n\nDevelop interactive visualizations of streaming neural, computer vision, and robotic glove data.\n\nIntegrate applications with connected medical devices, cloud services, and backend APIs, ensuring reliable performance and graceful handling of connectivity issues.\n\nTechnical Leadership & Regulated Delivery\nSet the technical direction for our user interface applications, establishing secure architecture, reusable UI components, and engineering practices that support safety, testing, and maintainability.\n\nCollaborate across software, hardware, research, and clinical teams to integrate applications with our broader medical-device system.\n\nDevelop software within our regulated quality management system and software lifecycle, contributing to requirements, architecture, verification, and documentation consistent with ISO 13485 and IEC 62304.\n\nPartner with quality, regulatory, and clinical teams to meet applicable safety, usability, and regulatory requirements.\n\nGuide external contributors to maintain consistency in architecture, implementation quality, and user experience.\n\nQualifications\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.\n\n7+ years of software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on experience shipping mobile applications.\n\nStrong proficiency in Kotlin or React Native, with experience building and shipping production Android applications.\n\nDemonstrated ability to build visually polished, responsive mobile interfaces and translate UX designs into production-quality applications.\n\nStrong understanding of mobile architecture, interaction patterns, performance, maintainability, and automated testing.\n\nExperience integrating mobile applications with backend APIs, cloud services, or connected devices.\n\nExperience shipping software in a regulated, safety-critical, or quality-managed environment, or within a rigorous, documented development process.\n\nStrong product judgment and communication skills, with the ability to own complex technical problems and collaborate across disciplines.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience with connected devices, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), real-time communication, or complex data visualizations.\n\nExperience developing medical-device, digital-health, or other safety-critical software.\n\nFamiliarity with IEC 62304, FDA software development expectations, or documentation supporting regulatory submissions.\n\nExperience with human-factors engineering, usability testing, or accessibility standards such as WCAG.\n\nFamiliarity with secure software development and medical-device cybersecurity requirements.\n\nPhysical Requirements\nAbility to work on site, including hands-on testing with prototype devices and participation in bench and integration sessions.\n\nHow We Work\nWe are intentional.
