United, by one thing, making money management straightforward and cost-effective for our customers.\nAbout the role\nAs a Senior Product Designer, you will own the end to end design for a product domain and become the design ‘go-to’ across the pods working within it.\nYou will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy. When the problem is clear, you’ll know how to get moving and deliver. When it’s ambiguous, you will help the team make sense of it, deciding what we need to learn, what we can safely assume and where we need to invest more time.\nYou’ll work closely with Product Managers and Engineering partners, but you won’t wait for someone else to define the problem for you. You will bring ideas, challenge requirements when you have a reason to, surface trade-offs and help the team make better product decisions and better customer experiences.\nFrom discovery and early concepts through to build, launch and what we learn afterwards, the full end to end experience is yours to own.\nWhat you’ll do\nOwn design across your domain\nBe accountable for the quality of design across the pods in your domain.\nWork autonomously on complex and ambiguous problems, bringing structure and design thinking when the path isn’t obvious.\nIdentify opportunities and bring ideas to the team rather than waiting for a brief.\nUnderstand the wider customer journey and how your work fits into the experience beyond your immediate feature or pod.\nUnderstand that the job doesn’t end with delivery. You will monitor, understand and find new opportunities once initiatives have gone live.\nUse discovery to reduce risk\nDecide what level of discovery an initiative needs based on its size, risk and uncertainty.\nChoose the right research or testing approach for the question you’re trying to answer.\nWork with the research team to recruit, test, synthesise and communicate evidence where appropriate.\nClearly separate what we learn from what we’re assuming.\nChallenge when important decisions are being made without enough evidence, and make the risk visible.\nBring customer evidence into product decisions rather than treating research as a separate phase of the process.\nThink like a product designer\nUnderstand the commercial context of your domain, the KPIs your work can influence and the constraints we operate within.\nIdentify and navigate customer, business, technical and regulatory trade-offs, challenging requirements when there’s a good reason to do so.\nPartner with your PM on roadmap thinking, sequencing and product decisions.\nSet a high bar for craft\nCreate thoughtful, robust experiences that work beyond the happy path, including real data, states, permissions, edge cases and errors.\nUse our design system fluently, extending it deliberately where needed, while working with other designers to maintain consistency across domains.\nBuild accessibility into your work from the start and use principles, evidence and constraints to explain your design decisions.\nGet things shipped\nTake work from early exploration through to build, launch and beyond, staying close to the outcome.\nPlan and sequence design work so Engineering isn’t held up by missing decisions or designs.\nManage competing priorities across multiple pods, adapting to change without losing sight of the customer problem or design quality.\nInfluence through collaboration\nBe customer obsessed and a strong voice for the customer in your domain, grounded in evidence.\nWork closely with Product and Engineering from the beginning, making key decisions together as a pod rather than as individual disciplines.\nCommunicate clearly with everyone from your immediate pod to senior stakeholders, balancing customer needs with commercial and technical constraints.\nHelp other designers grow\nShare your thinking, approaches and lessons with the wider design team.\nRaise the quality of the work around you through critique, collaboration and example.\nContribute to making design at Equals a place where people can do their best work.\nUse AI and new tools to work differently\nUse AI and prototyping tools to explore ideas, test concepts and answer questions quickly.\nUse AI to reduce the time spent on work that doesn’t require design judgement, creating more space for thinking, discovery and craft.\nBuild working prototypes when they can accelerate learning, within agreed technical boundaries and in partnership with Engineering.\nWhat we’re looking for\nWe’re looking for someone who is already operating at Senior level, rather than someone who simply has a certain number of years of experience. You will probably have:\nStrong experience working as a product designer on complex digital products.\nExperience owning design across a product area or domain, rather than only individual features.\nA track record of taking complex problems through discovery, design and delivery.\nStrong product thinking and an interest in the commercial context behind the work.\nExperience working closely with Product and Engineering in a cross-functional environment.\nA strong understanding of interaction design, information architecture and visual design.\nExperience conducting or working closely with user research and usability testing.\nExperience working with and contributing to a design system.\nA high bar for accessibility, interaction quality and the details that make products work well.\nThe ability to communicate and defend design decisions clearly, while being open to changing your mind.\nExperience mentoring or supporting other designers.\nExperience using AI and emerging tools to work differently, accelerate design and prototyping, and spend more time on the work that requires design judgement.\nFintech experience would be useful, but it isn’t essential.What’s more important is that you’re comfortable learning a complex domain, understanding constraints and designing products where the details matter.\nWhat success looks like\nAfter your first year, we’d expect you to be someone that your domain’s product and engineering teams rely on.\nYou’ll have built enough context to understand the customers, business and constraints without needing everything explained to you. You’ll be making good judgement calls about where to spend design and discovery effort, and you’ll have helped your teams make better product decisions as a result.\nYou’ll have shipped meaningful work, not just produced designs.
