Junior Geotechnical EIT | Geotechnical Engineering | Mine Waste

We are seeking a Junior Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our growing Mine Waste team. Our Mine Waste practice is a strategic area of growth, complementing our established rock mechanics and hydrogeology disciplines. You’ll work alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams on significant projects while contributing to the continued growth and development of our mine waste capabilities.

Why Join Equilibrium?

Global reach. Specialist expertise. Real influence.

Equilibrium brings together the global reach and expertise of an established consultancy with the autonomy and agility of a specialist firm.

Here, you’ll work closely with experienced leaders, have a genuine voice in the business and see the impact of your work firsthand. As we grow, you’ll have the opportunity to take ownership, deepen your expertise in geotechnical engineering and mine waste, and play a meaningful role in shaping what comes next.

We want our people to grow with the business, build meaningful relationships and make a lasting contribution - not simply be part of the team, but help build the future of Equilibrium.

The Role:

As a Junior Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training, you will support field investigations, technical analysis, data interpretation, and reporting for tailings and mine-waste projects. You will assist with routine calculations, stability modeling, monitoring, and technical deliverables under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers.

You will:

  • Project Delivery: Support geotechnical projects through field investigations, data analysis, technical work, and project documentation, primarily for tailings, mine-waste, and water retention facilities. Support dam safety tasks and develop familiarity with applicable guidelines under the direction of experienced engineers.
  • Field Investigations: Participate in drilling, sampling, test pitting, logging, inspections, construction observation, and routine facility monitoring, including collection of piezometer, instrumentation, and survey data.
  • Field Programs: Support coordination of contractors, laboratories, surveyors, equipment, and field logistics under the direction of experienced engineers.
  • Field Quality: Maintain accurate field records, samples, logs, photographs, and instrumentation data while following established health, safety, environmental, and QA/QC procedures. Communicate field observations, changes in conditions, and potential issues to intermediate and senior engineers. Promote and uphold a strong safety culture internally and externally.
  • Geotechnical Analysis: Perform routine calculations, basic stability checks, and technical analyses using fundamental geotechnical principles and established methods under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers. Build proficiency in geotechnical software and analytical tools through experience and training.
  • Data Analysis: Compile, QA/QC, validate, and interpret geotechnical, geological, hydrological, laboratory, and monitoring data, identifying basic data gaps or inconsistencies for review.
  • Technical Deliverables: Prepare figures, cross-sections, tables, logs, field reports, data summaries, and supporting technical documentation for engineering projects.
  • Collaboration & Development: Work with multidisciplinary project teams, contractors, and clients while developing technical and consulting skills through hands-on project experience, mentoring, and training.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Typically, 0-3 years of relevant experience in mining or engineering consulting; co-op, internship, or academic project experience considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, soil and rock mechanics, and slope stability.
  • Exposure to geotechnical design and evaluation of tailings dams, waste rock spoils, and/or co-management structures is an asset.
  • Familiarity with tailings, mine-waste facilities, geotechnical investigations, and field data collection is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with AutoCAD, GIS, or geotechnical software is an asset.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn and develop technical skills under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Valid driver’s license. Ability to drive company or rental vehicles for project and field activities, an asset.
