Backup Platform SRE Engineer (all humans)

What to do:

• Design, implement and continuously improve our enterprise backup solutions and platform capabilities.

• Provide Level 3 technical expertise and support for IBM Storage Protect, Veeam and DataDomain infrastructure.

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex incidents and problems, identifying and eliminating root causes rather than only addressing symptoms.

• Own the reliability, availability and performance of backup services and continuously improve them against defined SLAs and SLOs.

• Implement monitoring, alerting and observability to provide clear insight into the health, capacity and performance of backup services.

• Automate operational activities, provisioning and configuration using Terraform, Ansible, scripting or similar technologies.

• Develop self-service capabilities and standardized solutions to reduce manual activities and improve the experience of internal customers.

• Collaborate with infrastructure, application, database and cloud teams to design and implement effective backup, recovery and disaster recovery strategies.

• Act as a technical advisor to the Product Owner, challenge existing solutions where appropriate, advocate for high-quality engineering standards, and drive informed technical decisions.

• Proactively evaluate the current platform, identify technical debt and opportunities for improvement, research emerging technologies, and recommend solutions that improve reliability, efficiency and scalability.

• Participate in disaster recovery planning, backup recovery exercises and resilience testing.

• Define and maintain standards, best practices and reusable patterns for backup and recovery.

• Create and maintain high-quality operational and technical documentation, including runbooks and recovery procedures.

• Participate in an on-call support rotation and contribute to improving operational readiness and reducing recurring incidents.

• Contribute to SRE practices such as automation, observability, incident management, problem management, capacity planning and continuous improvement.

Requirements

You check these boxes:

• 3+ years of active recent experience managing enterprise backup solutions such as IBM Storage Protect (TSM), Veeam and DataDomain, or similar technologies.

• Strong knowledge of backup, restore and recovery concepts, including backup policies, retention, replication and disaster recovery.

• Hands-on active experience with enterprise infrastructure and troubleshooting of complex backup environments.

• Recent experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management; Terraform and/or Ansible is a strong advantage.

• Recent active experience with scripting or programming for automation, preferably Python, PowerShell or similar.

• Understanding of monitoring and observability concepts and experience working with monitoring or logging platforms.

• Understanding of SRE/DevOps principles and a willingness to apply them to backup infrastructure.

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on root-cause analysis and long-term solutions.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical teams and with internal customers.

• Proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for the reliability of the platform.

• A competitive and performance-related salary dependent on your professional and personal qualifications is granted - we are obliged by law to quote the minimum wage of EUR 2.900,- gross per month for this full time position.
