The Mutuals Team sits within the Approved Persons and Mutuals Department (APM), which is part of the Authorisations Division.

You will assess and manage applications from societies, help deliver the Mutuals strategy through stakeholder engagement, project work, policy development and casework, and lead cases involving the use of discretionary statutory powers.

The Mutuals Team delivers the FCA’s functions as registering authority for mutual societies: https://www.fca.org.uk/firms/mutual-societies

  • Build specialist expertise by assessing applications under multiple pieces of mutuals legislation and managing complex statutory cases
  • Gain exposure to high-profile and challenging issues, balancing legal compliance, regulatory judgement and evidence-based decision making
  • Lead meaningful casework with significant responsibility, including exercising discretionary statutory powers and society cancellations
  • Develop strong stakeholder management skills through close engagement with industry professionals, legal representatives and internal specialists
  • Conduct pre-application meetings with new and existing societies, influencing outcomes from the earliest stages and building trusted relationships
  • Thrive in a varied and fast-paced environment where you can apply project management approaches to deliver a diverse portfolio of work
  • Benefit from extensive learning, development and career progression opportunities within a supportive team committed to helping colleagues grow and succeed

Skills required

Minimum:

  • Proven experience of independently planning, prioritising and delivering a varied and demanding workload to agreed timescales and quality standards
  • Relevant experience of investigating complex issues and critically assessing and analysing information from multiple sources to reach sound, evidence-based decisions
  • Proven experience of communicating complex information clearly in writing and verbally, and of building effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, including senior stakeholders

Essential:

  • Demonstrating the ability to identify and evaluate key issues arising from complex or incomplete information, investigate matters thoroughly and exercise sound, proportionate judgement to reach balanced, evidence-based decisions
  • Communicating complex issues clearly and persuasively, adapting your approach to influence stakeholders, provide constructive challenge and build effective relationships at all levels
  • Taking ownership of outcomes by organising and coordinating work effectively, delivering accurate, high-quality outputs while managing competing priorities and dependencies
  • Operating independently with appropriate escalation, remaining effective under pressure and adapting constructively to changing priorities, feedback and challenge
