As a Transportation Design Engineer, you will lead the evaluation, selection, and design of various transportation system solutions for different communities. You will be involved in generating conceptual designs and construction documents, collaborating with staff at all levels, coordinating closely with members of complete streets engineering and planning teams, and engaging in discussions with clients and communities to build strong relationships.

Your main focus will be on business development and innovative, well-thought-out design solutions that align with client objectives and adhere to the latest best practices established by NACTO and similar organizations. Additionally, you will be responsible for project management, overseeing tasks, and assigning technical staff as necessary to deliver projects to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Build and strengthen relationships with public agencies, private-sector clients, developers, institutions, and other partners throughout the region.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, contributing to client strategy, proposals, interviews, and long-term relationship development.
  • Collaborate with office and regional leadership to grow Fehr & Peers' presence and reputation in the local market.
  • Mentoring and training your colleagues and receiving mentorship from senior staff
  • Leading and managing tasks for engineering and planning studies
  • Preparing conceptual designs that are accurate, feasible, and visually engaging
  • Preparing plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for transportation engineering projects, including complete streets, bikeways, traffic signal, signing/striping, and lighting projects
  • Performing field work, such as site review preceding design, and support during construction
  • Managing direct client interaction and communication with members of the public through community engagement

Qualifications

  • 7-12 years of experience in transportation engineering consulting
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban and regional planning, or a related major (e.g., geography, math, statistics, economics)
  • Currently hold a professional engineer’s (PE) license
  • Experience applying MUTCD, and AASHTO design standards on a variety of projects
  • Familiarity with ODOT and local agency design and operations standards and experience applying them on Oregon projects
  • Experience developing client relationships and contributing to practice growth through business development and repeat work.
  • Experience with preparing and reviewing signing, striping, and traffic signal plans
  • Safety countermeasure selection and design
  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Familiarity with mobility issues and how they affect transportation engineering
  • Interest and experience with mentoring and training staff
