We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager of our digital banking team, to build the backend of our new platform.\nYou'll own a broad backend surface: core banking services in areas such as onboarding, accounts, money movement, and risk, plus partner integrations and operational tooling for internal teams.\nOur backend stack includes TypeScript, NestJS, PostgreSQL, and AWS. We use AI for software development and are moving toward more agentic ways of working. We want engineers who'll help shape how we get there.\nWe're a small team, so breadth matters. You'll work closely with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations, and help set the patterns and standards that other engineers build on as we grow.\nWhat you’ll do\nDesign, build, and operate the services behind our digital banking platform, from data model to production.\n\nBuild integrations with banking partners, payment rails, and KYC/AML providers, designed to handle retries, failures, and reconciliation.\n\nDesign clear, well-versioned APIs for our mobile app, web apps, and internal systems.\n\nBuild the back-office tools our teams use to run the platform, such as customer servicing, KYC and fraud review queues, and account changes with approval controls.\n\nMake services secure and observable from day one, with robust access control, structured logging and tracing, and audit trails for sensitive actions.\n\nTake part in our on-call rotation, respond to incidents, and drive follow-up improvements.\n\nPartner with Product and Design to shape problems, weigh technical trade-offs, and turn priorities into achievable delivery plans.\n\nUse AI tools and agents to accelerate how we design, build, test, and ship.\n\nRaise the bar through sound technical design, thoughtful code review, and mentoring.\n\nYou’ll succeed here if you have\n6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in TypeScript and Node.js backends.\n\nExperience designing APIs and data models backed by relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including migrations, transactions, and query performance.\n\nA track record of building and operating integrations with external systems where correctness and reliability matter.\n\nExperience running production systems in a cloud environment (AWS preferred), including CI/CD, observability, and incident response.\n\nExperience working with multiple software vendors, and owning vendor integration and relationship management\n\nDaily use of AI coding tools, with the judgment to review and validate what they produce.\n\nThe ability to make pragmatic technical decisions and communicate trade-offs clearly.\n\nNice to have\nNestJS or similar TypeScript backend framework experience\n\nFintech, lending, banking, payments, or other regulated environments (e.g. KYC/AML, PCI, SOC 2).\n\nLedgers, double-entry accounting, or money-movement systems.\n\nEvent-driven or asynchronous architectures (queues, outbox pattern, idempotent processing).\n\nApplication security practices such as OAuth/OIDC, secrets management, and encryption at rest and in transit.\n\nInfrastructure as code (Terraform or CDK).\n\nHelping a team adopt agentic development workflows, including the context, guardrails, and review practices that make them work.\n\nWhy Fig\nMake an impact: Rare opportunity to join early and help shape the future direction of a fast-growing fintech company.\n\nHigh ownership: Take on a high-impact role with direct exposure to senior leadership and company-building initiatives.\n\nStrong culture: Work in a team that values impact, accountability, curiosity, and collaboration.\n\nHybrid work environment: Balance of remote and in-office work (currently one day a week in Toronto), while maintaining strong collaboration.\n\nCompetitive compensation: Expected base salary range between $150,000 -
