[FEU]\nThis position can be located in Greensburg, PA or Reading, PA.\nThe job of Substation Design Engineer requires an individual to be self-directed with an interest and / or ability to create and manage engineering designs, equipment and standards for the Substation Engineering group within FirstEnergy. This position will work within a staff of engineers, survey crews, drafters / layouts, both internal and external, engaged in a wide variety of engineering design, from the request for project estimation through construction and record update. This position will report on the progress of design projects and advise of any issues that could impair the successful completion of the project on a proactive basis. This position must provide technical support to Substation and Transmission personnel, Real Estate, Project Management and Construction crews verifying that no safety standards are compromised, checking for accuracy, and monitoring expenditures to ensure projects stay within budget allocation and meet the required in-service date.\nResponsibilities Include:\nCreating engineering designs and work scope for substation projects and confirming documentation and support is available to necessary personnel. Possible items including steel structures, foundations, clearances, layout drawings, grounding, oil containment, lightning protection, schematics, and wiring diagrams.\n\nEnsuring designs support a safe environment for transmission lines and substations personnel, contractors and the general public.\n\nPreparing bills-of-material and specifications to procure needed equipment and materials for a substation project.\n\nPreparing and filing applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary. PE preferred.\n\nReviewing NESC clearance requirements and Maintenance personnel and ensure the public safety is protected.\n\nAssisting Real Estate in the acquisition of Substation property by coordinating the preparation of sketches, maps, exhibits and easement plans.\n\nDirecting technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects.\n\nWorking with outside engineering firms, vendors, equipment manufacturers and consultants.\n\nProviding engineering support to employees to assist in their learning of standards, procedures, designs, and associated issues.\n\nAnalyzing engineering issues, structures, equipment, etc., and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options.\n\nPreparing estimates for proposed projects.\n\nReviewing manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications.\n\nConducting design reviews, plant audits, and test witnessing at manufacturer’s facilities as necessary.\n\nEvaluating equipment ratings and requirements, and project schedules to facilitate the accurate ordering of equipment to support project in service dates.\n\nManaging equipment orders for Substation projects from the initial request for equipment through delivery (technical details, bid evaluation, schedule, drawing review, design review, action items testing, and delivery).\n\nSupporting communication across business units regarding project needs. Convening internal project schedule compliance review meetings with necessary parties to assure deliverables support project schedule and are within the project budget.\n\nResearching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.\n\nEnsuring standards and equipment specifications are up to date and accurate, reviewing against industry standards and best practices.\n\nParticipating in industry meetings to confirm FirstEnergy has a voice in direction of industry (i.e. IEEE, EPRI, etc.).\n\nAbility to obtain Engineer in Training and Professional Engineering license is preferred. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution (3) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program. Civil Engineering is preferred.\n\nA Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.\n\nMinimum of 2 (two) years of Engineering experience is required.\n\nA Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate Preferred.\n\nWorking knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including but not limited to Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
