This role is responsible for supporting high-volume medical device spring production using WAFIOS spring coiling equipment and associated secondary operations. The Engineering Technician will work closely with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Production teams to optimize processes, improve equipment performance, troubleshoot manufacturing issues, and support operator training.\nLocation: Libertyville, IL\nShift Schedule: 0800a-0430p M-F\n What a Typical Day Looks Like\nSet up, adjust, operate, and troubleshoot WAFIOS CNC spring coiling machines including tooling, guides, coiling points, pitch tools, and cutoff systems.\nSupport production of compression, extension, and torsion springs used in medical device applications.\nAnalyze spring characteristics such as free length, outside diameter, pitch, spring rate, squareness, and load requirements.\nDiagnose and resolve manufacturing issues related to spring geometry, machine setup, tooling wear, material variation, and equipment performance.\nPerform first-piece inspections and process verifications using calipers, micrometers, optical measurement systems, force testers, and spring load testers.\nInvestigate process deviations and implement corrective actions to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.\nConduct engineering trials, machine studies, DOE activities, and capability evaluations.\nCollaborate with engineers to optimize spring designs, manufacturing methods, tooling concepts, and machine settings.\nSupport process validation activities, including IQ/OQ/PQ and process capability studies.\nDevelop and document machine setup standards, troubleshooting guides, and best practices.\nPerform preventive maintenance and replacement of worn machine components.\nTroubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and servo-controlled machine systems.\nAnalyze production data and equipment performance trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.\nAssist with startup, qualification, and commissioning of new spring manufacturing equipment.\nTrain operators, spring makers, and technicians on machine setup, operation, troubleshooting, and inspection procedures.\nSupport root cause investigations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).\nRequired Qualifications\n8+ years of experience in spring manufacturing, precision manufacturing, or automated production equipment.\nHands-on experience with WAFIOS spring coiling machines (FUL, FMU, or equivalent models preferred).\nStrong understanding of spring manufacturing principles, including:Free length\nOutside diameter (OD)\nPitch\nSpring rate\nLoad testing\nHelix and cast\nMaterial behavior\n\nExperience troubleshooting CNC spring coiling equipment and related automation systems.\nAbility to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and tooling designs.\nStrong mechanical aptitude and machine setup experience.\nKnowledge of precision measurement equipment and statistical process control methods.\nExperience with preventive maintenance and equipment reliability programs.\nFamiliarity with FDA-regulated, medical device, or highly regulated manufacturing environments.\nProficiency with PC-controlled manufacturing equipment and machine interfaces.\nTechnical Skills\nWAFIOS machine programming and setup\nSpring tooling adjustments and optimization\nMechanical troubleshooting\nElectrical troubleshooting including:Motor overloads\nSensors\nFuses\nBroken wires\nFault diagnosis\n\nPneumatic systems\nRoot cause analysis\nStatistical process control (SPC)\nProcess validation\nTechnical training and mentoring\nContinuous improvement methodologies\nAW20\nWhat you'll receive for the great work you provide:\nFull range of medical, dental, and vision plans\nLife Insurance\nShort-term and Long-term Disability\nMatching 401(k) Contributions\nVacation and Paid Sick Time\nTuition Reimbursement\n\nApplication Deadline:\nApplications for this job position will be accepted for at least five days following the job posting start date below and continuing until the end date below or until the position is filled.
