Yet logistics and sustainability teams often work with different data, tools, and priorities. Meanwhile, regulations and industry standards are raising expectations for how companies measure and manage their emissions.\nMost climate tools stop at reporting: a dashboard or a year-end PDF, produced long after a shipment has moved. They rarely reach the people deciding how to route goods, when to ship, or how much inventory to hold.\nThe Climate team at Flexport is building emissions intelligence directly into the platform where supply chain decisions are made. We help customers weigh cost, speed, and emissions together-and turn that understanding into action.\nThe Opportunity\nFlexport already runs the shipments, holds the data, and provides the platform where customers manage their supply chains. That puts us in a strong position to connect climate insights with the operational decisions that drive emissions.\nYou will be the primary engineer for Climate, working independently of our existing engineering teams and partnering closely with the Climate Manager, your main day-to-day business stakeholder.\nThink of it as a small startup within Flexport: direct access to the business, a broad scope, and substantial ownership. Together with the Climate Manager, you will identify the most valuable problems to solve, shape the product direction, and turn ideas into reliable software. This role calls for someone who enjoys both deciding what to build and building it.\nThings We\nTurning complex shipment and emissions data into clear, actionable choices.\nWorking directly with stakeholders and users to understand what would make their lives better.\nBuilding simple, reliable products and learning from how people use them.\nFinding opportunities where lower costs and lower emissions go together.\nTaking an idea from an ambiguous problem to a useful product in production.\nYou Will\nWork closely with Climate Programs Manager to understand customer needs, challenge assumptions, and translate business goals into a practical product roadmap.\nOwn delivery from problem discovery and technical design through implementation, launch, operation, and iteration.\nBuild emissions intelligence into everyday supply chain decisions, including routing, transport mode, shipment timing, and inventory planning.\nHelp customers identify opportunities to reduce emissions using Flexport’s shipment data.\nMake lower-emission choices easier to understand and act on within existing workflows.\nDevelop products that help customers understand the wider environmental footprint of their supply chains, beyond freight.\nDeliver useful improvements incrementally, balancing speed, scope, maintainability, and data accuracy.\nCoordinate with other engineering teams when your work depends on shared systems, integrations, or expertise.\nMeasure whether what you ship solves the underlying problem, and use that evidence to decide what comes next.\nYou Should Have\n5+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong engineering foundation and experience delivering production software.\nA track record of working independently: you can bring structure to an unclear problem, set priorities, unblock yourself, and follow through without a detailed specification or constant direction.\nStrong product judgment: you understand user needs, identify what is worth building, and make thoughtful tradeoffs between impact and effort.\nExperience working closely with business stakeholders: you ask good questions, explain technical choices in plain language, and constructively challenge ideas when needed.\nThe ability to own features across the stack, including user interfaces, backend services, and data integrations.\nA love of simple, well-tested code that is easy to extend and hard to break.\nComfort taking responsibility for the reliability and maintenance of what you build.\nA bias for action, combined with the judgment to recognize when you need input or help.\nAn aptitude for learning quickly, including unfamiliar business domains and technologies.\nNice to Have\nA personal motivation to work on climate and environmental challenges.\nExperience in climate technology, emissions accounting, logistics, or supply chain software.\nExperience building products in a startup or another small team with broad ownership.\nExperience turning complex data into customer-facing insights and decision tools.\nPrior climate experience is a plus; curiosity and the ability to learn the domain matter more.\nHow We Work\nYour day-to-day work will center on a close partnership with the Climate Manager, with collaboration across engineering as needed.\nYou will have substantial autonomy and will be expected to keep stakeholders aligned on priorities, progress, and tradeoffs.\nWe build and launch incrementally, using feedback to guide the next step.\nIn Amsterdam, we come to the office two to three times a week to collaborate, whiteboard, and spend time together.\nFlexport’s broader technology stack includes React, TypeScript, Ruby on Rails, Kotlin, Kubernetes, GraphQL, gRPC, Postgres, Kafka, and Snowflake.
