Position Summary

FOCUS Learning is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Senior Accountant/Controller to own our day-to-day accounting operations. This is a high-impact role for an accounting professional who is either a strong Senior Accountant ready to grow into a Controller-level position, or an experienced Controller comfortable remaining hands-on with the day-to-day work. The Accountant/Controller will own the full accounting cycle, from daily bookkeeping and reconciliations to month-end close and audit support, while partnering closely with finance leadership to provide insights that shape strategic decisions. This role requires someone who can take immediate ownership of our NetSuite ERP system and thrives in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Accounting Operations

• Own the full accounting cycle, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, reconciliations and monthly/annual close
• Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close in NetSuite, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and balance sheet reconciliations
• Prepare accurate, timely GAAP financial statements and supporting schedules for the CFO, executive team, board, investors, and lender reporting
• Apply ASC 606 revenue recognition to SaaS subscriptions, professional services, and multi-year contracts, and maintain deferred revenue schedules
• Maintain the close calendar and checklist, and work to shorten the close timeline over time
• Serve as the primary in-house owner of FOCUS Learning's NetSuite ERP system

Billing, Accounts Receivable & Collections

• Prepare and issue customer invoices accurately and on time, including subscription renewals, services, and milestone billing
• Own the AR aging and collections process, following up directly with customers and partnering with Sales and Customer Success to resolve past-due balances
• Apply cash receipts, reconcile customer accounts, and maintain clean customer and contract data
• Provide visibility into expected collections to support the CFO's cash flow forecast

Accounts Payable, Payroll & Cash

• Oversee accounts payable, including vendor setup, invoice processing, approvals, and payment runs
• Review and record payroll and benefits activity, and support payroll processes across entities
• Monitor daily cash activity and complete timely bank and credit card reconciliations
• NetSuite & Process Improvement
• Serve as the in-house NetSuite expert for accounting, billing, AR, and reporting workflows
• Troubleshoot issues, build saved searches and reports, and coordinate with outside consultants on configuration as needed
• Identify manual processes and implement automation and controls that help the finance function scale

Audit, Compliance & Analysis

• Prepare schedules and documentation for the annual external audit and serve as a primary point of contact for the audit team
• Maintain internal controls and documented accounting policies and procedures
• Support sales tax, 1099, and other compliance filings in coordination with outside advisors
• Support the CFO with budgets, forecasts, variance analysis, board materials, and the integration of acquired businesses

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

• 4-7 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including time in public accounting and in-house at a small or mid-sized company. Senior Accountants ready for the next step and early-career Controllers are both encouraged to apply.
• NetSuite experience is required. The ideal candidate works comfortably in NetSuite day to day, including journal entries, invoicing, AR, reconciliations, and reporting, without needing training on the fundamentals.
• Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and a track record of closing the books accurately and on time. SaaS or subscription revenue experience and familiarity with ASC 606 are a strong plus.
• Willingness to work across the full finance function, from technical accounting to billing, collections, and AP. On a lean team, no task is too small.
• Advanced Excel skills, strong analytical ability, and exceptional attention to detail.
• Clear, professional communicator who is comfortable contacting customers about past-due invoices and working with executives, auditors, and cross-functional partners.
• Eager, self-motivated, and curious, with a genuine desire to learn the business and grow into greater responsibility.

Benefits

• This is a full-time position, salary range $105k-$135k, based on experience
