Ford is an American automaker founded in Dearborn in 1903 by Henry Ford, who introduced the moving assembly line and turned the car into a mass-market product. It is now organised into three businesses reported separately: Ford Blue for internal combustion vehicles, Model e for electric vehicles and software, and Ford Pro for commercial customers, which bundles vans and trucks with telematics, servicing and charging under multi-year contracts. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange and still partly controlled by the founding family through a special class of shares, its F-Series pickup has been the best selling vehicle in the United States for decades.

Our advanced energy team is a dynamic division dedicated to powering the future through advanced electric vehicle (EV) battery systems and related electrified energy solutions. As we scale these advanced electrification initiatives, we are seeking technically strong engineers who can help establish the foundation for our product execution, safety strategy, and vehicle readiness.

In this position...

This is an expanded design and release (DR) role. The BMS Design Release and Technical Delivery Engineer owns full release and quality accountability for battery management system (BMS) controller assemblies, and in addition owns the technical timing plan and supplier technical delivery for the BMS work stream, from concept through production launch and into the field.

The successful candidate has carried release accountability for production electronic hardware through job one, has owned cost, investment, and quality targets, and is comfortable holding both internal teams and suppliers to committed dates.

What you'll do...

  • Design Release
    • Own part numbering, drawing and CAD release, engineering change records, and bill of material accuracy - including engineering-to-manufacturing BOM alignment - for all BMS assemblies.
    • Own piece cost, tooling investment, mass, and packaging commitments; assess and communicate the cost impact of every design change.
    • Provide technical input to enclosure design, attachment features, and package sizing.
    • Own obsolescence monitoring, running change management, alternate source qualification, and end-of-life planning.
    • Define service part strategy, serviceability, part marking, labeling, and traceability requirements.
    • Own prototype demand planning and allocation; own manufacturing launch through ramp, including build events, first article inspection, and containment, and the implementation of end-of-line test capability.
  • Quality and Product Integrity
    • Own design FMEA, control plan, special characteristics (SCCAF), and supplier Schedule A; drive resulting action closure.
    • Own the DVPR document and the verification results and traceability record. (Verification methods are authored by the System Architect; execution sits with validation engineering.)
    • Own warranty, reliability, and quality targets; lead warranty investigation, plant returns, and failure analysis.
    • Lead field service actions, including 14D, 5-Why, and recurrence prevention documentation.
    • Represent the BMS work stream in technical and quality review forums; drive campaign prevention and lessons learned.
  • Program Timing
    • Author and maintain the BMS technical timing plan aligned to program gates and vehicle milestones.
    • Own the critical path - tooling, test capacity, and long-lead components - and escalate ahead of the commit point.
    • Drive recovery planning with quantified trade-offs when dates are at risk; identify collisions across hardware, software, and validation work streams.
    • Own gate readiness assessment, go/no-go recommendations, and the cadence of technical review, status, and risk reporting.
  • Supplier Technical Delivery
    • Own supplier technical delivery against statements of work and committed dates; lead supplier reviews and drive open-issue closure.
    • Drive supplier APQP, PPAP, change requests, and capacity assessments to completion.
    • Manage deviations and concessions, including technical assessment, cost impact, and disposition.
    • Drive structured technical documentation from suppliers - design rationale, calibration methodology, diagnostic strategy, toolchains, and test infrastructure - sufficient for Ford engineering to own, modify, and support the design through its production life.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including design and release accountability for production electronic hardware through launch.
  • Demonstrated ownership of engineering release and change control for a production product, including bill of material accuracy and cost, investment, or quality targets.
  • Experience with core quality documentation - DFMEA, DVPR, control plan, and special characteristics.
  • Experience with post-launch quality resolution, including warranty and field concern investigation.
  • Experience working with suppliers on technical deliverables and production readiness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally, including to supplier and manufacturing sites.

Even better, you may have...

  • Experience releasing high-voltage battery electronics or safety-related electronic control units.
  • Experience with WERS, AIMS, and field service action processes.
  • Experience with electronic control unit hardware and embedded software release processes.
  • Experience managing a global supply base across multiple time zones.
  • Experience with product safety, functional safety, or cybersecurity process requirements applied to electronic control units.
  • Experience establishing internal engineering ownership of externally developed hardware or software, including documentation and toolchain transfer.
  • Experience owning technical timing plans and critical path for a hardware and software deliverable set.
  • Technical Skills
    • Engineering release and change control
    • Bill of material ownership
    • DFMEA, DVPR, control plan, SCCAF
    • Cost, investment, and value engineering
    • Warranty and field concern resolution
    • Program timing, critical path, and gate readiness
    • Long-lead tooling and capacity planning
    • Supplier technical management, APQP/PPAP
    • Obsolescence and running change
    • Service part and traceability requirements
