About Fortaegis
Fortaegis is building a full-stack Secure Compute architecture for the era of AI and quantum computing. Fortaegis Secure Compute delivers the security, speed and scale that legacy security architectures cannot, as compute becomes increasingly distributed and autonomous. Its unified architecture spans silicon to software, combining hardware-rooted trust, cryptography and software orchestration to secure computing environments at scale.
Fortaegis has expanded across Europe, the United States and Asia and is working with more than 25 enterprises and governments across AI infrastructure, defense, advanced manufacturing, telecommunications, critical infrastructure and automotive. Following its oversubscribed $50 million Series A (Financial Times coverage), Fortaegis is advancing the commercial deployment of its Secure Compute architecture across form factors and end markets while expanding its product roadmap and growing its engineering and commercial capacity.
As a DevOps Engineer the goal is to build and maintain the infrastructure that enables reliable integration, deployment, and testing of embedded systems on real hardware.
You will work at the intersection of embedded software, Linux, networking, CI/CD, and hardware testing. Your main responsibility is to ensure that our physical test environments are stable, reproducible, and ready for development and QA.
This role goes beyond conventional CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure. You will work directly with hardware, configure networks, deploy software and firmware to target devices, troubleshoot system-level issues, and automate test infrastructure.
Key Contributions
Maintain reliable physical test environments for embedded product development and system testing.
Deploy and troubleshoot firmware, FPGA bitstreams, and software on target hardware.
Manage GitLab infrastructure and workflows supporting development and automated testing.
Automate hardware setup, deployment, and test environment management.
Improve the reproducibility, availability, and maintainability of our test infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Test Infrastructure and Embedded Systems Integration
Assemble, configure, and maintain physical test setups, including embedded boards, power supplies, network equipment, cabling, and supporting devices.
Deploy firmware, FPGA bitstreams, and software to target hardware using appropriate methods, such as JTAG, UART bootloaders, and SD-card images.
Configure and troubleshoot Linux-based embedded systems, including boot processes, services, and network interfaces.
Perform initial setup and integration of new hardware revisions in collaboration with hardware and software engineers.
Prepare and maintain known-good system images and deployment procedures for development and QA.
Investigate integration problems spanning hardware, firmware, operating systems, applications, and network configuration.
Linux and Networking
Administer Linux systems used for development, build, deployment, and hardware testing.
Configure and troubleshoot networking involving Ethernet interfaces, switches, routers, DHCP, IP addressing, routing tables, and network services.
Maintain reliable connectivity between test devices, management systems, and supporting infrastructure.
Diagnose problems involving Linux services, system configuration, network connectivity, and hardware communication.
Git and GitLab
Administer and maintain GitLab projects, repositories, permissions, merge request workflows, runners, and related infrastructure.
Apply sound Git practices, including branching, merging, rebasing, reverting, and resolving integration conflicts.
Develop scripts and tools to automate repetitive infrastructure and deployment tasks using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
Support CI/CD pipelines by ensuring that hardware test environments and deployment infrastructure integrate reliably with automated builds and tests.
Document infrastructure configuration, deployment procedures, troubleshooting steps, and operational knowledge.
Hardware Test Automation
Maintain test rigs and supporting equipment, including programmable power supplies, serial consoles, and remotely controlled devices.
Help automate hardware test environments, device reset, power cycling, and deployment workflows.
Collaborate with QA and development engineers to provide reliable environments for automated system testing.
Investigate opportunities to improve hardware test automation and infrastructure observability.
Required Skills
Strong Git knowledge: Comfortable with branches, commits, merge requests, merging, rebasing, reverting, conflict resolution, and understanding the consequences of Git operations.
Strong GitLab knowledge: Experience working with repositories, merge request workflows, permissions, CI/CD pipelines, and GitLab runners.
Strong Linux skills: Confident administering and troubleshooting Linux systems, services, networking, and system configuration.
Strong networking fundamentals: Able to configure and troubleshoot Ethernet networks, IP addressing, routing, DHCP, switches, and routers.
Practical scripting skills: Able to automate tasks using Python, Bash, or similar tools.
Systematic troubleshooting: Able to investigate problems across multiple components and identify root causes rather than relying on workarounds.
Hands-on mindset: Comfortable assembling and maintaining physical test environments, working with hardware, and diagnosing issues in a lab.
Clear communication and documentation: Able to explain technical issues and create procedures that others can follow.
Collaborative approach: Comfortable working with embedded software, FPGA, hardware, build, and QA engineers.
Nice to Have
Experience with embedded Linux systems, including bootloaders, kernels, device trees, and system images.
Experience deploying embedded software and firmware using JTAG, USB-to-UART adapters, serial bootloaders, or SD-card images.
Experience with FPGA development and deployment workflows, such as Vivado or Vitis.
Experience with Labgrid or LAVA, especially managing hardware resources, test environments, and automated deployment.
Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, automated hardware testing, or test lab infrastructure.
Experience with pytest or other test automation frameworks.
Experience with Docker, container registries, and containerized infrastructure.
Experience with Yocto or PetaLinux build and deployment workflows.
Experience with serial consoles, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, programmable power supplies, or remotely controlled power switches.
Experience with Ansible or other configuration management tools.
What Success Looks Like
Development and QA teams have stable, well-documented test environments available when needed.
Firmware, FPGA images, and software can be deployed to physical devices reliably and repeatably.
Network and infrastructure issues are diagnosed and resolved systematically.
Hardware setup and deployment tasks become increasingly automated.
GitLab and supporting infrastructure are maintained using reliable, well-understood workflows.
Engineers can reproduce test environments and follow documented procedures without depending on a single person.
Who Will Thrive in This Role?
You enjoy solving practical engineering problems that span software, operating systems, networking, and hardware. You are comfortable moving between a terminal, a GitLab project, a network switch, and a physical test bench.
You do not need to be an FPGA designer or an expert in every embedded technology. However, you should be a strong Linux and infrastructure engineer who is interested in embedded systems and enjoys making complex systems work reliably together.
Experience with embedded hardware testing and Labgrid is a significant advantage.
