We are seeking aSenior Backend Engineer with a strong background in software engineering and data to help design, build, and optimize the data systems that power our products and business insights, who is passionate about data architecture, reporting, and building scalable backend systems. Primary Responsibilities:

• Data & Reporting Ownership: Take ownership of a multi-tenant reporting architecture (currently 16 pools with individual tenant databases, over 3000 tenants), ensuring stability, accuracy, and high performance for millions of processed records.
• Migration Strategy: Architect and execute the long-term migration of legacy reporting systems (MSSQL/SSRS) into our modern core infrastructure (NodeJS/Aurora MySQL/AWS) with the potential to introduce Quicksights, Redshift or other technology.
• Data Pipelines & ETL: Build, maintain, and scale robust ETL processes, data replication processes, and data sync engines utilizing batch processing and parallel execution chains.
• Database Optimization: Identify and address performance bottlenecks using advanced database performance strategies like index optimization, denormalized columns, and rollup tables.
• API Development: Design and build data-intensive, scalable REST APIs that power core SaaS reporting features without relying on excessive external API calls.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with Product to translate reporting requirements into technical implementation plans. Work with Frontend Engineers to ensure smooth delivery of data visualizations.
• Code Quality: Participate in code reviews, write automated integration/unit tests, and ensure backend code and data models follow modern best practices.

Skills & Competencies:

• Database Performance: Proven ability to manage massive data volumes (millions of records). Strong understanding of indexing, stored procedures, denormalization strategies, and creating rollup tables for reporting.
• Advanced SQL & MySQL: Deep expertise in MySQL and writing highly performant, direct SQL code. Must be comfortable with advanced concepts including complex Joins, Subqueries, Dynamic SQL, and Common Table Expressions (CTEs).
• ETL & Data Sync: Extensive experience building ETL processes, data replication, and high-volume data synchronization engines.
• AWS Cloud Ecosystem: Experience working with AWS cloud services, specifically Aurora Serverless, DynamoDB, Lambda, and SQS.
• NodeJS & JavaScript: Proficiency with NodeJS (Express/Fastify), JavaScript (ES6+), and asynchronous programming patterns.
• ORM Experience: Experience working with modern ORMs (like Sequelize) while knowing when to bypass them for raw SQL performance.
• System Migration: Demonstrated experience modernizing legacy databases or migrating complex architectures into modern cloud ecosystems.
• Detailed-Oriented: A strong sense of ownership for data integrity, code reliability, and accuracy in a product environment.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively across engineering and product teams.
• User first: A deep empathy for the user and a desire to learn about how they use Commerce7.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering with a direct focus on database architecture, data processing, ETL, and reporting systems.
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+) and NodeJS (Express, Fastify, AWS Lambda).
• Advanced hands-on experience with MySQL, modern ORMs (e.g., Sequelize), and writing optimized raw SQL.
• Direct experience working with AWS cloud services (Aurora Serverless, DynamoDB, SQS).
• Demonstrated track record of executing database migrations or legacy system modernizations (experience with MSSQL, SSRS, or PowerShell is a strong advantage).

Salary Range: $116,000 - $140,000 CAD
