By selling directly to consumers we cut out the middleman, lower costs and pass the savings on to our customers.\nWe're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to help design, build and scale the connected hardware behind our fleet of distributed energy devices. This is a hands-on role spanning embedded systems, networking, device security and fleet connectivity, from prototype through to deployment. You'll help build resilient connectivity, secure provisioning and robust telemetry, working closely with firmware, hardware and backend teams to deliver production-ready systems.\nResponsibilities\nDevelop and maintain connectivity across Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and BLE; build secure, reliable device messaging using MQTT, CoAP, HTTP or WebSockets; support device time synchronisation using NTP or PTP.\nDevelop low-level firmware and drivers for microcontrollers and embedded peripherals.\nIntegrate devices with cloud IoT platforms and backend services; improve telemetry, health monitoring and observability; support reliable field operation and debug fleet issues.\nWork closely with our test team to build the firmware and software that runs our automated test suite.\nWork closely with hardware, power electronics, mechanical and software teams; contribute to design reviews, technical documentation and interface specifications.\nRequirements\nBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.\n2+ years of experience building connected embedded products, or strong relevant industry/project experience.\nProficiency with C/C++ for embedded systems, with experience of RTOS environments such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.\nStrong proficiency with Python for testing, tooling or automation.\nExperience building automated test harnesses using test equipment such as programmable power supplies, loads, logic analysers, communications interfaces and more.\nSolid understanding of device connectivity and networking fundamentals, including IP networking and common transport/application protocols.\nExperience implementing or supporting secure device communications using TLS, certificates or device provisioning workflows.\nFamiliarity with firmware update systems, bootloaders or CI/CD workflows for embedded software.\nExcellent practical debugging experience using lab and software tools such as logic analysers, protocol analysers, network sniffers or observability platforms.\nStrong problem-solving skills and the ability to work across hardware and software boundaries.\nBonus: low-power wireless (Thread, Zigbee, BLE); cloud IoT services on AWS, Azure or GCP; secure boot, TPMs, secure elements or hardware attestation; EMC/RF testing, antenna bring-up or factory test; awareness of standards such as IEC 62443, ETSI EN 303 645, ISO 27001 or GDPR;
