Bring world-class events to life.

The City of Sandy Springs is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and highly organized Technical Director to lead backstage and production operations at City Springs and the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center.

If you thrive in fast-paced live event environments, have deep technical production expertise, and enjoy leading teams while delivering exceptional experiences, this is an exciting opportunity to make an impact at one of Georgia’s premier performance and event destinations.

From theatrical productions and concerts to community events and private rentals, this role is at the center of making every event safe, seamless, and memorable.

Why this role matters

As the Technical Director, you will oversee production operations across multiple City Springs venues, including:

  • Byers Theatre - 1,100 seats
  • Studio Theatre - 400 seats
  • Conference Center
  • Rooftop Terrace Bar
  • Outdoor City Green
  • CityBar

You will coordinate the technical elements that bring performances and events to life - including lighting, audio, staging, rigging, projections, and scenic support - while also supervising staff, supporting clients, managing budgets, and helping ensure successful execution across all venues.

This position also serves as the Safety Warden for live events on the City Springs campus and plays a key role in strategic planning, operational support, and department-wide success.

What you’ll do

The Technical Director will:

  • Lead and coordinate production operations for rental and presented events at City Springs
  • Advance all production-related aspects of performances and events
  • Oversee lighting, sound, projections, staging, rigging, fly systems, and scenic elements
  • Develop clean, professional floor plans, layouts, and light plots using CAD technology
  • Meet with clients and prospects to assess technical needs and identify efficient event solutions
  • Manage production details, stage specifications, and technical logistics to ensure smooth event execution
  • Enter and reconcile all production-related charges in Momentus booking software
  • Create and manage production budgets
  • Negotiate and procure rental equipment and production services
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with production vendors and service providers
  • Hire, schedule, train, and supervise technical staff and stagehands, including coordination with IATSE crews when needed
  • Supervise the AV Technician for the conference center
  • Maintain production files and records for current and historical events
  • Participate in staff meetings and serve as a member of the management team
  • Serve as Manager on Duty for selected events
  • Help develop and implement production-related policies and procedures
  • Support a culture of professionalism, respect, safety, and customer service excellence

What we’re looking for

We are looking for a proven production professional who combines technical expertise with leadership, customer service, and operational excellence.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
  • Five (5) years of experience in a performing arts center environment
  • Experience working with both IATSE and non-union crews
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Production or a related field preferred

What sets you apart

The ideal candidate is:

  • A calm and confident leader under pressure
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: stage rigging, sound reinforcement, and performance lighting
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Vectorworks
  • A strong collaborator who works well with artists, clients, crews, vendors, and internal teams
  • A detail-oriented planner who can balance logistics, budgets, staffing, and deadlines
  • Committed to delivering a high-quality production experience across every event space
