Mgr, Fleet Operations

GCI's Mgr, Fleet Operations will lead GCI’s statewide fleet operations, providing strategic and operational oversight of vehicles, equipment, maintenance, safety, compliance, vendors, technology, and asset lifecycle planning. Partners across the organization to ensure fleet reliability and availability while optimizing utilization, controlling costs, reducing downtime and risk, and supporting critical field operations throughout Alaska.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Own the strategy, operations, performance, and results of Fleet Operations. Lead and develop employees, establish standards and KPIs, manage performance, and ensure alignment with company objectives, safety requirements, and customer needs.
• Fleet Operations & Asset Lifecycle- Lead statewide fleet operations, including vehicle availability, maintenance, acquisition, assignment, replacement, and disposal. Establish fleet strategy, operating standards, preventive maintenance, and replacement plans.
• Safety, Compliance & Technology- Ensure fleet safety and regulatory compliance. Oversee fleet policies, records, telematics, and technology to monitor performance, utilization, maintenance, safety, and operational risks.
• Financial & Vendor Management- Manage fleet budgets, costs, forecasts, and vendor performance. Develop recommendations for vehicle acquisition, leasing, replacement, standardization, and disposal.
• Reporting & Continuous Improvement- Partner with business leaders to optimize fleet capacity and performance. Provide executive reporting and implement improvements that increase reliability and service while reducing cost, downtime, and risk.

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

* A combination of education and relevant work experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis.

Education*:

• High school diploma or equivalent; this requirement is met by candidates who hold an associate or bachelor’s degree.
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations, Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain, Finance, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience*:

• Minimum five (5) years of experience in fleet operations, fleet management, transportation, logistics, vehicle or equipment operations, maintenance management, asset management, or a related operational function, including:*
  • Minimum two (2) years of direct people-leadership experience, including performance management, coaching, and workload prioritization.
  • Experience managing vendors, service-level expectations, budgets, and operational performance metrics.
• Working knowledge of preventive maintenance, vehicle lifecycle planning, safety and incident management, registration and inspection requirements, and fleet recordkeeping.
• Proficiency with fleet management and/or telematics systems and Microsoft Office, including Excel-based analysis and reporting.

PREFERRED:

• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet management, transportation, logistics, equipment operations, maintenance management, or a related field.
• Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM), Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS), or comparable fleet certification.
• Experience managing geographically dispersed, mixed, or specialty fleets, preferably in Alaska or other remote operating environments.
• Experience with Samsara or comparable telematics platforms, fuel-card administration, maintenance analytics, and total cost of ownership analysis.
• Experience with capital planning, vehicle acquisition or leasing, upfit standards, asset disposal, contract negotiations, and vendor sourcing.
• Lean Six Sigma, project management, safety, transportation compliance, or related professional certification.
• Experience supporting telecommunications, utilities, construction, field services, or other 24/7 critical-service operations.

Work Requirements and Conditions:

• Work is primarily sedentary with routine computer use and periodic visits to parking areas, maintenance facilities, dealerships, vendor sites, and field locations.
• Ability to work assigned schedules in an office and operate standard office equipment.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and effectively.
• Physical ability to safely conduct vehicle and equipment inspections and access fleet assets in varying weather and site conditions.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions during routine operations and time-sensitive incidents.
• Availability to work additional hours, including weekends, holidays, and before or after normal business hours, as business needs require.
• Ability to periodically travel throughout Alaska, including remote or rural locations and during varying weather and winter conditions.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with diverse employees, vendors, and internal customers.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required for travel between offices, vendor facilities, worksites, and other locations. May be required to operate company vehicles and maintain a driving record that meets company requirements.
