GE Vernova is an American energy company created in April 2024 when General Electric split into three, taking the power, wind and electrification businesses. It builds and services gas turbines that generate a substantial share of the world's electricity, onshore and offshore wind turbines, grid equipment including transformers and high-voltage transmission, and nuclear technology through GE Hitachi and its BWRX-300 small modular reactor. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company sits at the centre of two simultaneous demand shocks: the electrification of transport and industry, and the electricity requirements of large-scale artificial intelligence data centres.

Job Description Summary

The FPGA Development Engineer will play a key role in the design and development of advanced Control & Protection systems supporting the global energy transition. Working as part of a highly skilled, international engineering team, you will define technical requirements, develop and enhance FPGA-based solutions, and deliver innovative features for VSC and LCC HVDC technologies.

This is a business-critical engineering role, with responsibility for delivering robust, high-quality designs that meet product requirements, project milestones and customer needs. You will contribute to the development of both current and next-generation solutions, working collaboratively with engineers across global locations to solve complex technical challenges and continuously improve our products.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Analyse system and product requirements and translate them into effective hardware and FPGA functions.
  • Design, develop and enhance FPGA applications using appropriate HDL technologies.
  • Support the development of new product features while maintaining and improving existing and legacy designs to extend product capability and lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing and production data packs.
  • Produce clear and robust functional and technical design specifications.
  • Develop test specifications for routine and type testing and support the verification and validation of designs.
  • Participate in and contribute to technical and design reviews, providing constructive engineering input and helping to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Apply structured engineering practices to ensure designs meet company, quality and documentation standards.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, international engineering team while taking ownership of individual technical deliverables.
  • Support continuous improvement of FPGA development processes, tools and methodologies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree or higher in Electrical, Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant engineering experience.
  • Significant hands-on experience in FPGA design and development, using VHDL, Verilog or equivalent HDL technologies.
  • Strong understanding of digital electronics, electronic components and engineering principles.
  • Excellent hardware and FPGA debugging and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose issues at both design and hardware level.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse technical requirements, develop effective engineering solutions and deliver to agreed quality and project timescales.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Model-Based Design, ideally using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience developing hardware or FPGA solutions for real-time control applications.
  • Knowledge of high-speed digital hardware design and PCB layout.
  • Experience with FPGA simulation, verification and validation methodologies.
  • Scripting experience using Python, Perl or similar languages.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN.
  • Familiarity with engineering lifecycle and collaboration tools such as JIRA.
  • Experience with power electronics and control system design.
  • Experience with FPGA development tools and devices from vendors such as Xilinx, Altera/Intel or Microchip.
  • Knowledge of Agile development practices, such as Scrum.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly.
  • A self-motivated, results-oriented approach with a genuine commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement.
