This role is about making smart architectural decisions, designing resilient services, and building the systems that power reliable customer and marketplace experiences.\nYou will help shape and scale the backend capabilities behind MoneyLion’s product surfaces, working closely with product, analytics, and engineering teams to support partner integrations, experimentation, event quality, and core business workflows.\nKey Responsibilities:\nTake Ownership: You'll help maintain a high bar for quality through design reviews, code reviews, testing, observability, and production readiness.\n\nCollaborate cross-functionally: Partner with product, analytics, and fellow engineers to shape solutions and deliver reliably.\n\nArchitect for change: Design and build backend systems that are scalable, modular, and resilient to evolving product and business needs.\n\nImprove Performance & Quality: Strengthen reliability, maintainability, observability, and operational excellence across critical services and workflows.\n\nBuild clean data flows: Create dependable APIs, events, and service boundaries that support partner integrations, experimentation, analytics, and downstream systems.\n\nLead AI-assisted development: Use AI tools for prototyping, scaffolding, refactoring, and exploratory development, then validate the output with strong engineering judgment.\n\nRaise quality through testing: Build and maintain automated test coverage across unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end layers.\n\nAbout You:\nStrong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and modern backend architecture.\n\nComfortable designing and operating RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systems in production.\n\nStrong working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases.\n\nFamiliarity with asynchronous and event-driven systems such as Kafka, SQS, or similar technologies.\n\nComfortable working in modern development environments, including Git-based workflows, containerized services, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes).\n\nStrong grasp of reliability, observability, maintainability, and performance.\n\nFamiliarity with testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and modern development workflows.\n\nSkilled at partnering with Product, Analytics, and engineering teams to deliver in a fast-paced environment.\n\nStrong communication skills and a collaborative, problem-solving mindset.\n\nEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.\nExperience: 5+ years in software engineering, with a track record of building and shipping production applications.\nMust Have Skills:\nDeep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, including building and operating production-grade services.\n\nStrong understanding of REST API design, service contracts, and backward compatibility.\n\nExperience designing and evolving distributed systems, including service decomposition and inter-service communication.\n\nSolid grasp of data modeling and persistence, including SQL and NoSQL tradeoffs, indexing, and query performance.\n\nExperience with asynchronous and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, SQS), including event design and reliability considerations.\n\nStrong understanding of observability, including logging, metrics, tracing, and debugging production systems.\n\nExperience implementing testing strategies across unit, integration, and contract testing layers.\n\nFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and cloud-native environments (AWS, Kubernetes).\n\nExcellent collaboration and communication skills, with a bias toward clear, maintainable system design.\n\nNice to Have Skills:\nExperience with high-scale, consumer-facing systems or marketplace platforms.\n\nFamiliarity with API gateways, rate limiting, and service-level protections.\n\nExperience with data pipelines, event quality, and analytics instrumentation.\n\nHands-on experience with tools like Claude Code (or similar AI-powered IDEs) and modern AI coding models.\n\nPractical understanding of where AI is strong vs. where it falls short, paired with sound engineering judgment.\n\nAbility to use AI agents to explore multiple implementation approaches, evaluate tradeoffs, and converge on robust solutions without introducing fragile or “AI-shaped” systems.\n\nPersonal Attributes:\nAbility to thrive in a fast-paced, high-tech environment and manage complex problems\n\nWhat’s Next:\nAfter you submit your application, you can expect the following steps in the recruitment process:\nRecruiter - 15min Phone Call\n\nHiring Manager - 30min Video\n\nLive Coding (Round 1) - 1hr Video\n\nLive Coding (Round 2) - 1hr Video\n\nSenior Leader - 30min Video\n\nLocation: New York, NY (Onsite 3 days per week)\nThe annual base salary for this position is expected to be between $158,080 and $178,880. Base salary is one component of Gen's total compensation package, which includes 401(k) match, health insurance options, disability coverage, life insurance, and unlimited paid time off.
