Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.\nOur mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society. \nWe were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms. \nOur lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production. \nWe are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency. \nHelp us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable. \nAbout This Role\nAs a General Matter Mechanical Engineer, you will design, build, test, and own the mechanisms and mechanical structures enabling our next-generation enrichment technology - including precision optical and photonic subsystems, beam delivery hardware, and components that must survive demanding thermal, chemical, and material-compatibility conditions unique to uranium processing. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, optical engineers, software engineers, chemical engineers, manufacturing engineers, nuclear engineers, materials scientists, metallurgists, and physicists. If you seek high impact and are excited by fast-paced, intense, Skunkworks-style projects at the frontier of enrichment technology, we encourage you to apply to join our team.\nResponsibilities\nDevelop mechanisms and mechanical structures for enrichment - including precision mounts, alignment stages, beam delivery paths, or enclosures for optical and photonic subsystems - and own them through the entire product lifecycle including requirements definition, design, development, qualification, and release to production.\nSelect and specify materials and coatings for enrichment hardware based on mechanical, thermal, optical, and corrosion/wear performance requirements.\nSupport optimization of designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability.\nFunctionally test your hardware through thermal, vibe, shock, durability, etc., including precision alignment and beam pointing/stability testing for optical assemblies.\nPerform root-cause analysis on test failures and develop hardware mitigations.\nCollaborate with materials scientists and metallurgists to characterize material behavior under process-relevant conditions - including exposure to high-energy optical sources - and translate findings into design decisions.\nParticipate in design review and provide feedback to ensure design objectives are met.\nWork closely with electrical, optical, software, manufacturing, and nuclear engineers to ensure designs are effectively integrated with overall system requirements.\nPreferred Skills and Experience\nBackground or working knowledge in materials science or metallurgy, particularly failure analysis, material selection, or performance of metals/alloys under extreme thermal, mechanical, or corrosive conditions.\nExperience designing precision mechanical structures for optical or photonic-based (e.g., alignment stages, athermal mounts, beam delivery paths, thermal management for high-energy optical components).\nStrong understanding of engineering fundamentals.\nAbility to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals even with partial information.\nExperience in a fast-paced engineering environment or a highly technical role requiring a resourceful, entrepreneurial approach to complete tasks within tight timeframes or budget constraints.\nAdditional Requirements\nAbility to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.\nEqual Opportunity Employer\nGeneral Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with General Matter is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.\nCompensation and Benefits\nThe base salary range for this role is $140k-$220k annually.\nCompensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. Please note that the stated salary range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5444,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity","Retirement plans","Stock options"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Nuclear Energy","Nuclear Engineering"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-17T18:11:42Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":41,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.553,"p_room":0.75,"age_days":37,"expected_fill_days":47,"reasons":["conf:0","stale_co","velocity","win:late","comp:brand"],"computed_at":"2026-10-25T05:49:26Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":220000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/general-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/general-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-26T02:35:44Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":3324,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-27T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":171806},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=171806"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fgeneral-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fgeneral-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fgeneral-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/general-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fgeneral-matter-mechanical-engineer-optomechanical-systems"}]}
